ATLANTA April 20 (UPI) -- An Atlanta-area man who poisoned his children's soup to justify a lawsuit against the Campbell's Soup Co., was sentenced to five years in prison.
U.S. District Court Judge Julie Carnes sentenced William Cunningham, 41, on Thursday and also forbade him from having contact with his children for three years after his prison sentence ends, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Friday.
Cunningham confessed in February to spiking his two children's soup with Prozac, lighter fluid and hot peppers as part of a scheme to collect cash from Campbell's.
The normal maximum sentence for the federal charge of making a false statement is 18 months, but federal prosecutors sought a longer sentence because of the harm he exposed his children to, the report said.
At the time of the poisoning, Cunningham's son was 3, and his daughter was 18 months old.

Gee, I wonder why he didn’t get away with it? /s
He gets to have contact with the children he tried to MURDER after his prison sentence? This jerk should not be allowed to be within 100 miles of those kids ever!
So his son will be 11-12 years old when dear ole’ dad is allowed contact. That’s old enough to pull a trigger.

Fumb Duck.
Puts me in the mind of “The Sixth Sense”.
The scene where the mom put cleaner into her sick daughter’s soup still creeps me out.
Likely because I have a sister with Munchausen Syndrome. Her kids were always sick too....
While you are at theTimes check out Frank Gaffney’s artcle on Putin. http://www.washingtontimes.com/commentary/fgaffney.htm
Do we ever hear anything from the elites in D.C. about Russia & China? Remember the enemy is within.
Only five years?
Here’s hoping he’s placed in the general prison population, and they treat him like they do any molester.
I wish people here would stop wishing for prison violence and rape to be visited on various criminals.
For every criminal who’s getting the extra punishment, there’s one just as bad enjoying himself doing something dreadful.
Mrs VS
and, studies have shown IIRC that those who suffer sexual violence in prison come out worse, and start doing that to people on the outside..
“I wish people here would stop wishing for prison violence and rape to be visited on various criminals.”
A kind, noble sentiment on your part, Dear Lady. I’m glad there are people like yourself who mention such things in a public forum.
It highlights the best of us all.
That said, I stand behind my viewpoint on this 1,000 percent. Any man that would use his own children in such a way deserves whatever justice is met out by the general prison population.
Some have the luxury of worrying about how evil men are treated in prison. Some, like myself, have had experience with such men, and simply are incapable of the compassion you exude.
It’s not so much that I have compassion for this man. His just deserts are to be treated in the way he treated his children.
I object to a prison system that freely permits inmates to commit crimes in prison and to indulge themselves in the most vile enjoyments. That is reward, not punishment. Within prison, they assault not only murderers and rapists but men who are less violent and criminal than themselves, less protected by a gang, convicted of relatively minor offenses. If your son was dumb enough or drunk enough to get in an altercation with a police officer after being stopped for something, would you want him raped in jail?
The prison offenders take their prison pleasures and mindset with them when they are released.

“If your son was dumb enough or drunk enough to get in an altercation with a police officer after being stopped for something, would you want him “
Lets stay in context if you want to discuss this.
The man in question isn’t going to jail for five years for DUI, or attacking a police officer. He’s going to jail for poisoning his own kids so as to be in a position to sue a company for his own profit.
Think that crime through for a moment.
You think he realized if they died he’d be able to get more or less money in a court settlement?
Sorry, I have no compassion for this man. You asked ‘what if it was your son’?
If I had a son, and he poisoned my grandkids to make a profit, there wouldn’t have been a trial, there would have been a missing person’s report, concerning my son who disappeared....
I am in context. The thugs are not so lofty-minded that they rape only child-molesters and murderers. They rape car theives and check kiters and young men who clocked a police officer.
If you permit the one, you permit the other.
What someone deserves is not always what we should do to him, or have done to him, for our own sake, not for his.
Mrs VS
Another very bad answer to What are you in here for?
We cheerfully disagree.
How about we agree to assign this guy as Alec Baldwin’s foster child for five years?
(chuckle)
"No soup for you."
