Rudy Giuliani Leads John McCain by More Than 2-to-1 in Race for Republican Nomination
Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson Not Far Behind McCain ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is now the front runner by a wide margin in the race for the Republican nomination for the 2008 presidential election, even though the first primary elections will not take place until February 2008. Giuliani leads Senator John McCain by fully 39 percent to 18 percent among those who think they will vote in the Republican primaries or caucuses. Former Governor Mitt Romney (14%) and former Senator (and movie and TV star) Fred Thompson (13%) are not very far behind McCain. The only other candidate with more than two percent of Republican preferences is former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (9%). This Harris Poll surveyed 2401 U.S. adults online and was conducted by Harris Interactive(R) between April 3 and 16, 2007. This survey included 522 adults who expect to vote in a Republican primary or caucus and like all polls conducted well before an election, it should not be read as a prediction. Rather, it is a snap shot of the presidential "horse race", at a very early stage in the race. A previous column assessed the standing of the leading Democrats(1). Early in the survey, all adults were shown a list that included candidates in both major political parties as well as other Republican and Democratic leaders, and asked for whom they would consider voting. Among Republicans, Rudy Giuliani (59%) leads Colin Powell (46%), John McCain (40%), Condoleeza Rice (39%), Mitt Romney (37%), Fred Thompson (31%) and Newt Gingrich (29%). Among all adults, the rank order of Republican leaders is almost identical to the rank order among potential Republican voters. This is because none of the Republican leaders have exceptionally strong appeal among Democrats and Independents. At this time it seems that Republican candidates face an uphill battle against the Democrats. Overall 68 percent of all adults would consider voting for one of the listed Democratic leaders, compared to 59 percent who would consider voting for one of the Republicans. This is an online poll, so I want to be careful not to give it too much credence.

It has some disturbing news for those who think Rudy has wide crossover appeal.

They asked their entire set of respondents (democrat/republican/independent) which of the candidates people would even CONSIDER voting for (kind of like a "if there was only one candidate, and it was this guy, would you vote for him).

Rudy only got 32% of the total respondents to say they would consider voting for him. Only 59% of the republicans would, and only 15% of the democrats.

Colin Powell almost did as well as Rudy in this poll. Ouch.

But as I said, it's an online poll. Does anybody in the real world believe that Colin Powell is the 2nd-best republican candidate for President, like this poll says?

Right. I don't know why any Catholic would support Guiliani, practicing or not. If the GOP nominates him, then the GOP has reached even lower than the Democrats. Of interest will be the position of the Catholic clergy who blasted Kerry to see if their issue is life or politics.

Rudy Giuliani Tops All Others in New Jersey Poll (4-20-07)

New Jersey hasn’t supported a Republican for president for nearly 20 years, but a new poll released Thursday shows former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani leading all presidential challengers in New Jersey.

The Quinnipiac University poll found the Republican with similar leads over the three leading Democratic presidential candidates.

Giuliani leads New York Sen. Hillary Clinton 49 percent to 40 percent, the poll found. He leads Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 48 percent to 38 percent, and 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards 48 percent to 41 percent.

New Jersey hasn’t supported a Republican for president since 1988.

“It makes no difference who the Democrats put up — Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama or John Edwards — former Mayor Giuliani continues to knock out all challengers in the New Jersey presidential race,” said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute......

If Giuliani had felt that the question to be inappropriate, he could have said so. Or he simply could have stopped at how he would have counseled his daughter against the abortion, but that her choice was final.

But he didn't stop there. Instead, he volunteered to material abet his daughter's abortion.

The actual quote from Giuliani is:

“I have a daughter now,” Giuliani told TV’s Phil Donahue. “I would give my personal advice, my religious and moral views…I would help her with taking care of the baby. But if the ultimate choice of the woman — my daughter or any other woman — would be that in this particular circumstance, to have an abortion, I’d support that. I’d give my daughter the money for it.”
