Presidential contender Rudy Giuliani apparently believes change is good - at least that's the way it looks with his subtle shifts to the right on major issues like abortion, gun control and taxation in recent weeks.
It happened again yesterday - the pro-choice Giuliani was quick to applaud the Supreme Court ruling upholding a partial-birth abortion ban, calling it "the correct conclusion."
But when he was preparing to run against Sen. Hillary Clinton in 2000, Giuliani opposed a partial-birth abortion ban for New York, saying he would "preserve the option for women" and that he did not foresee ever changing his view.
Team Giuliani now says the Republican hopeful backs a ban that "includes an appropriate exception for threats to the life of the mother," and that additional medical evidence included as part of the 2003 law shaped his views.
Experts say Giuliani is not so much flip-flopping on his core beliefs as he is parsing his stances to comfort conservatives, and he's doing it sooner rather than later.
"He is fine-tuning his message," said Steffen Schmidt, a political science professor at Iowa State University. "The problem with that is that he does open himself up to all those flip-flop ads, comparing what he said then to what he says now."
The calculus has divided Giuliani into the old Rudy and the new Rudy.
Just this week, Giuliani said the Virginia Tech tragedy "does not alter the Second Amendment." Since he began running for President, he has said he believes states should have the power to set gun laws.
But as mayor and as a Senate candidate before dropping out for health reasons, Giuliani strongly favored mandatory federal licensing of handguns, and backed an assault weapon ban and a waiting period for gun purchases.

Just a week ago he said it was a “right” and that if poor women could not afford their constitutional PBA then the taxpayers should fund it. He’s a lying abortionist socialist pig.
I think Rino Rudy is the only man alive who can make John F. Kerry look intellectually consistent.
You forgot “gun grabbing, hate crimes promoting, global warming believing, 4th amendment violating, eminent domain abusing, gay agenda pushing, tobacco suing....” in your description.
His backers here alternately praise Rudy for not changing to get elected, and for saying things that go against his entire history. His mind is a clusterf*ck of incoherence.
I think he could kill somebody on national TV and the rudybots would still be with him. I’m blown away that some on a supposedly conservative website could support a guy with his positions. I’m stunned some can support such a flip-flopper. And i’m stunned some can support a guy with a personal life that is positively Clintonesque. Any one of those three should be enough to make you find someone else to support.
Okay. I’ll support Fred Thompson if he runs. I’ll vote for him in the primary. I know Fred will stand up to militant Islam and stare down the appeaser Jackasses. I know Fred is the social and fiscal conservative I want. But I have two questions. Can he beat Hillary? Will he fight the Global War with the bulldog tenacity required to win? I have my doubts. Can Rudy? I believe he can and will. If you want everything 100% to your liking in a presidential candidate—expect another Clinton presidency.
Maybe if he flops on global warming or the gay agenda, they might look for a different liberal to support.
If I want another clinton presidency, I’ll vote for the guy who seems just like him. Rudy.
If you want to split our Party WIDE OPEN--JulieAnnie is JUST THE MAN FOR THE JOB! Liberals like JulieAnnie should be 'safe, legal and rare'.
And in the democrat party only.
“He is fine-tuning his message,” said Steffen Schmidt, a political science professor at Iowa State University.
What Steffen meant to say was; He is trying to get his story straight so by the time the debates begin he will not stumble with his lies.
Hey, triangulation worked before. Makes a candidate electable doncha know.
One lesson from the War Room apparently not lost on the GOP's social liberals.
Bingo
Works well in the general....maybe. Even Clinton needed Ross Perot.
yep
Thats what the party's number crunchers think anyway.
But we know what would work better.
“If you want everything 100% to your liking in a presidential candidate”
And what % will conservatives get from rino rudy?
Sorry, I want a more wholly conservative candidate. Rudy ain't it.
As someone just said; going this route: he might make John F'in Kerry look intellectually consistent.
And that's damn hard to do!
