... Whoever curated the festivals selected screenings obviously understands that John Wayne the man is not nearly as important to the American psyche as the characters John Wayne portrayed. ... ... Wayne's acting was never really respected by critics because he always essentially played himself. ...
So, John Wayne the man is not important, but his characters are. Yet, he always played himself. Huh?
Yet another author who can't keep his thoughts straight in adjacent paragraphs.
Nevermind. I guess I'll just watch The Green Berets this evening and get over it.

There certainly was a time where men were men.... and it was celebrated. I was thinking of John Wayne, of Red Skelton’s Pledge of Alliegence and other other-era celeberties as well as regular men.
I miss them.

Remember exactly where I was when I heard the Duke died.
Like I’d lost a family member.
Happy Birthday ‘Sean Thornton.’

Hey, where's one of the most entertaining Wayne flicks of all: “The War Wagon”?
Lomax (Kirk Douglas): Mine hit the ground first.
Taw Jackson (John Wayne): Mine was taller.

Not a bad grudging tribute from a liberal magazine and author.

I have a John Wayne story......A Mr Early, whom I met was John Wayne’s neighbor for two decades. When Oldsmobile had that huge station wagon with the glass panels along the sides of the roof,Wayne bought one. Then he took it to a coach factory ( where they make limos) and had the roof raised 4 inches.
When the roof was finished John came to pick up his new “better” station wagon. Mr Early made a point of saying it was spotless as it arrived in John’s drive way.
Now,according to Mr Early, that was the last time in three years that station wagon was washed.
Mr Early said “ I think he really believed he was driving a stage coach”..............lol
2nd story: Many actors were friends of the Duke and came to his house all the time. In the day Rod Taylor was Dukes friend and was visiting the Duke. Now,Wayne’s house had all rocks ,no grass and the desert natural look, yet Duke had an oriental gentleman who did his lamdscaping.
One mornin’ Rod said...”Duke why do you have an oriental landscaper when you don’t have a blade of grass ? “
John Wayne said “.ahhhh , well I made him surrender every day”

“Call me crazy, but I’ve always thought of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) as a Jimmy Stewart film.”
The writer REALLY needs to watch that film again.
2nd best Duke film.

Rooster Cogburn: Mr. Rat, I have a writ here says you're to stop eating Chin Lee's cornmeal forthwith. Now it's a rat writ, writ for a rat, and this is lawful service of the same. See, doesn't pay any attention to me. [shoots the rat]
Chen Lee: [Runs into the room] Outside is place for shooting!
Rooster Cogburn: I'm servin' some papers!

my best line ever in any movie is a John Wayne b&w movie where he plays a pharmacist from Boston looking to build stakes in San Francisco.........as the Duke takes in the sights and power people,he meets the “man that owns the town” and his soon to be wife. The wife continues to watch the Duke work the room from afar.
At a certain point this pretty women approached the Duke and says “ I’ve been watching you from afar, You are dignified, respectful, educated and quite the gentleman, do you have ANY flaws ?”
The Duke looked at her, paused and said “ YES, I tell the truth “
