>> patrick fitzgerald (lower case intentional) was involved in the TWA 800 “non-investigation”. I assume that fitz was an assistant US attorney during the klintoon years, and was then promoted by GWB. <<

Patrick Fitzgerald (upper case intentional) was the lead prosecutor in the case against Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman and 11 others charged in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and because of this he became the National Security Coordinator for the Southern District of New York. In 2001, REPUBLICAN U.S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald (R-IL) (no relation), nominated Fitzgerald for the position of U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. The Senator choose him because he said he wanted an outsider who was tainted by Illinois political culture. The ruiling Democrat elites in the state howled at the idea of an "outsider" and unknown being choosen and vehemently protested the appointment. President Bush agreed to the Senator's recommendation (as is customary to nominate someone choosen by the senior Senator of your party in that state), and on October 24, 2001, the nomination was confirmed by the Senate.

The appointment turned out to be a faithful one, as Fitzgerald has successfully prosecutured a number of major Democrat crooks in the state, including number of top aides to Democrat Richard M. Daley, the mayor of Chicago, on charges of mail fraud, alleging numerous instances of corruption in hiring practices at City Hall. He also continues to investigate the administration of current Illinois Democrat Governor Rod Blagojevich, and is looking into wrongdoing related the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority and vendors who signed leases to occupy the recently remodeled Illinois Tollway oases. Fitzgerald recently made national headlines for indicting a top fundraiser of Blagojevich and Senator Obama, Antoin Rezko. His most successful case so far has been getting a gulity pled of now former Chicago City Clerk James Laski (DemocRAT) who pled guilty to pocketing nearly $50,000 in bribes for steering city business to two trucking companies.

Of course there are some people (all of which are from outside Illinois) who base their entire opinion of Fitzgerald from his work on the Scooter Libby case, and keep insisting Fitzgerald is "partisan" and "angling to be Hillary's A.G.". They kind of remind me of the Ken Starr haters who screamed "partisan! "partisan! partisan!" during any investigation of the Clinton adminstration, no matter who was behind it.
