Account Changes in N.J. Gov. Crash
Associated Press ^ | 04/18/07 | TOM HESTER Jr., Associated Press Writer

It was an ominous tale — an erratic driver in a red pickup racing wildly along the nation's busiest toll road sends the governor's sport utility vehicle careening into a guard rail.

But that story, relayed hours after Gov. Jon S. Corzine was critically injured, has been debunked by a new state police report detailing how his driver was dashing with emergency lights flashing at 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. The alleged erratic driver wasn't a villain but a young man trying to get out of the way of the governor's onrushing SUV.

......

Corzine was heading to the governor's mansion April 12 for a meeting with Don Imus and the Rutgers University women's basketball team when he crashed on the Garden State Parkway north of Atlantic City. His SUV was in the left lane with its emergency lights flashing when a red pickup tried to get out of its way.

But the pickup's right wheels went onto the grassy highway shoulder, and the driver overcorrected, swerving back on the road. That set off a chain reaction: A white pickup truck swerved to avoid the red truck, struck Corzine's sport utility vehicle and sent it careening into a guard rail.

That is correct.

His injuries are consistent with being thrown up against the dashboard/windshield. Either the airbag didn't deploy because there was insufficient front impact, or it had been inactivated.

It's pretty easy to tell if somebody was wearing their seat belt/shoulder harness in a high speed crash --- they have a beautiful set of bruises across their hips and on one shoulder.

That 91 was a slow day

Note that the black box (ADS) only records the speed for the last five seconds. The gov's driver may have had to slow down for the traffic?

Any time you get embrangled with politicians, it's bad.

I'm glad they cleared the kid. Being overtaken from behind by a large vehicle at high speed is unnerving - nobody stares in their rear view mirror all the time, so you glance back and you see your mirror full of grille and lights . . . anybody might overreact.

I don't believe he was in the front seat.

I have a hunch he was in the back seat with the woman ... Just a hunch.

I cant believe a 200 plus pound man flew over the front seats. I just dont buy it.

We know that affairs with him can be extremely profitable.

That is such an old joke, it's come round for the second time and is funny again I guess.

We lived in NJ for 4 years and a little bit . . . parts of the state are very beautiful, but the U.S. 1 corridor and parts of the Garden State Parkway very definitely are NOT.

I don't follow you.

I don't think he could fly over the seats either -- ergo he was in the right front.

Seems a bit atypical for a high-end politico to be riding in the right front, though. But if he hit the back of the front seat I don't think his injuries would be this severe -- because the seat back collapses and absorbs a good deal of the shock.

I wonder if he has facial injuries - that would be consistent with hitting the windshield, although he could have facial injuries from hitting the headrest on the front seat.

It would be pretty clear to an accident investigator where he was located in the car, if the investigator could get a look at his injuries via photographs. I used to do automobile accident investigation a long time ago . . .

I had a tank on a tractor trailer flatbed blow by me going 90+ at the bigging of the 2nd gulf war. That was a WTF moment.

A reporter should get all the EZ-Pass toll records for Corzines vehicle for the last year.

You’re dreaming if you think these guys pay tolls.

I think that there is a greater than zero chance that the Gov’s pants were around his ankles when the accident occurred.

For a second I thought that said "It was an ominous tale — an erratic driver in a red herring racing wildly along".

I drive down that stretch of the GSP every few months. It is narrow with trees very close to the roadway and no guardrails. They have been charging tolls on this highway since it was built and have paid it off so many times that even Donald Trump would be envious but they still can’t figure out how to widen it and make it safer. It is not unusual to see cars going over 100 mph there too.

I don’t blame the governor for driving fast. Who wouldn’t want to abuse power a bit to get to drive over the speed limit?

But, it cost this man his life.

Where are all those on here who claimed, without a shred of evidence, that it was an illegal alien driving the red pickup? I love the FR lynch mob!

I quite agree with you, but if you review the first FR thread on the crash you will find a lot of posters more than willing, even eager, to tag the red pickup driver with being an illegal alien, an ignorant non-english speaking person, a casino affirmative action hire, a retard only allowed to drive by PC, etc, etc.

Now, any of those MIGHT have turned out to be true, but there was no evidence for any of them at the time, and, of course, they weren't true. A great example of many posters who say "I'll bet that it is . . . . ." but who never stick around to pay up.

In the Suburban you can activate of deactivate the passenger side airbag... there is a light on the rear view mirror to tell the driver if it is activated or not.
