The welcome for Fred Thompson wasn't just warm, it was effusive. The former Tennessee senator and actor is still weighing whether to run for the GOP presidential nomination but House Republicans who met with him Wednesday gushed over the prospects of Thompson candidacy.
They called him presidential, a leader, a proven conservative, an exciting prospect and "a breath of fresh air."
"I wanted to come over and see some of my old friends and make some new friends and tell them what was on my mind and listen and to see what was on their minds," Thompson said in a brief statement to reporters camped outside the Capitol Hill Club.
"We had a good talk. I enjoyed it, and we'll be seeing some more of each other I'm sure," added Thompson, the actor who plays the gruff district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's "Law & Order."
Before ducking into a waiting vehicle, he shook his head no when asked whether he had a timeline for deciding whether to run for president. Thompson has appeared to move closer to a candidacy in recent weeks. Last week, he disclosed that he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer, nearly three years ago but now is in remission.

You mean “Democrats for Fred”? I can see it, if that is what you mean.
But if he can unite the Republican party, we win. Ain't gonna happen with a Guiliani.
oops..meant italics on that
I think they mentioned “actor” because like it or not, that makes this potential run especially newsworthy in an entertainment-obsessed culture like ours. I think they’ll try to slam Fred as they would any pubbie, but he has the kind of comfortable charm that shines through. He’s not likely to be portrayed as risky and crazy, as the media may portray Giuliani and McCain; or too slickster, as they may try to portray Mitt. They might try the “out of touch” angle, but Thompson has a long list of credentials dealing with Internet and other technology issues. Watch the man speak — it’s going to be tough to believably call him slow and doddering.
Well, I’m kind of a conservative LINO (libertarian in name only, since the big L party has long since gone off its nut). :)
If Thompson enters the race and selects another conservative who has crossover appeal like Pence or DeMint it'll be a landslide in '08.
There is nothing wrong with libertarianism...its principles are sound (actually more sound than the GOP), but we need to rid ourselves of the liberals who are destroying our country. And in order to do that we have to stand together to defeat the evil of liberalism. I am with you in my heart, please join the fight.
I’ll let my tagline do the talking!!!!!! THE TIME IS NOW FRED!!!!!!
Two reasons to hate UNC. Roy(it’s better to say his name in French)Williams, and the BreckGirl teaching there!!!!!
Do you know what Mr. Thompson’s stance is pertaining to the North American Security Properity Partnership and related issues such as the opening of US borders to foreign truckers?
I am a CHURCH LADY!
Rudy and Fred apples and oranges. Do your own research!
“You mean Democrats for Fred? I can see it, if that is what you mean.”
I see potential in Sen. Thompson. I assume there will be a “Democrats for Fred” cropping up sooner or later regardless.
I like what I see so far. He can communicate, which is absolutely vital. He is a bit too corporate in his conservatism for my taste, and I wish he was a little more conservative on certain issues. But there is no such thing as a “perfect” candidate and I don’t expect to see one. And he’s a heck of a lot better than most of the socialist Republicans we’ve had to deal with in recent years.
As I’ve noted before....people do grow into the roles they find themselves in.
I’m still watching. And I’m slowly warming to the idea of a President Thompson.
“But if he can unite the Republican party, we win.”
He might be able to pull it off.
I’m waiting for the Fred-haters to fire off their first good salvo regarding Senator Thompson and how he responds. We’ll see what the cretins can dig up, and I’ll have a better idea about him as a candidate.
Since cretins can never seem to hold their fire, I’m sure we’ll see something soon.
“Well, Im kind of a conservative LINO (libertarian in name only, since the big L party has long since gone off its nut). :)”
I know what you mean. The “L” party could have been a contender at one time.
Well, if that’s the worst he’s done, he’ll have no problem. But I doubt it. I’m not criticizing Sen. Thompson here, but I’d find it hard to believe that he hasn’t done something controversial in his time as an attorney and Senator. And whatever that is will be used as a bludgeon against him. Not to mention the things that he and his family has done that are completely innocent....but will be twisted and used against him in any case.
The upshot is that he’s going to take some hits. That’s not so important as how he deals with it. That gives us some insight as to his character.
