House GOP gush over actor Fred Thompson

The welcome for Fred Thompson wasn't just warm, it was effusive. The former Tennessee senator and actor is still weighing whether to run for the GOP presidential nomination but House Republicans who met with him Wednesday gushed over the prospects of Thompson candidacy.

They called him presidential, a leader, a proven conservative, an exciting prospect and "a breath of fresh air."

"I wanted to come over and see some of my old friends and make some new friends and tell them what was on my mind and listen and to see what was on their minds," Thompson said in a brief statement to reporters camped outside the Capitol Hill Club.

"We had a good talk. I enjoyed it, and we'll be seeing some more of each other I'm sure," added Thompson, the actor who plays the gruff district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's "Law & Order."

Before ducking into a waiting vehicle, he shook his head no when asked whether he had a timeline for deciding whether to run for president. Thompson has appeared to move closer to a candidacy in recent weeks. Last week, he disclosed that he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer, nearly three years ago but now is in remission.

If hes divorced, why aren’t the GOP Church ladies shrieking about it like they do with Giuliani?

They might be aware of what I learned just the other day. He and his first wife were married, as I recall, when she was 17. They were married for 28 years and had a daughter and a son who is a lawyer in Tennessee. He was divorced for 20 years before he married his present wife, who was active in the GOP. They have 2 children, latest 5 months ago. His daughter by his first wife had a chronic painkiller addiction problem. She was 38 years old and working on his last senatorial campaign when she died of an accidental overdose. Fred left D.C. partly because of that.

No doubt, but should this man step up to the plate, he’s going to knock the ball out of the park!

There are other candidates that I have looked at, and that I hold out some hope for, but Fred will own the field if he decides to play.

Sure haven't heard that said about Giuliani.

You don't want to provoke the Giuliani supporters. They will hijack the thread because they don't want Hillary to be President.

“actor Fred Thompson”? How about “former senator Fred Thompson.”

When the AP gushes over John Edwards, he’s “former Senator John Edwards” not “trial lawyer John Edwards.”

In the AP's defence Fred is at present an actor, with a contract running.

John Edwards is unemployed, but his most recent job was "Senator"

John Edwards is currently a law professor at UNC-Chapel Hill.

I hate to say this given my obvious status as a Democrat in bad standing.....but frankly, I’m glad to start seeing some bolts of lightning flying at FR. The cretin population has gotten pretty thick of late.

Well, I’m not exactly gushing. But I am very happy to see Sen. Thompson getting closer to running. He’s a middle of the road conservative who actually has a chance of winning.

Truth be told, I wasn’t exactly wild about Ronald Reagan at first. But I warmed to him enough to spend significant time working on his campaign in 1980.

Well most of those “Republican” Congressmen haven’t done much of anything else in the past six years, so they probably need to gush over someone to keep their jobs. It would be interesting to see a list of those gushers.

“If hes divorced, why aren’t the GOP Church ladies shrieking about it like they do with Giuliani?”

The same reason they didn’t shriek about Reagan, he got a divorce also.

Yeah, I get the sense that you’re probably going to have to tolerate one or two this go ‘round. I see potential.
