Ethanol Vehicles Pose Significant Risk To Health, New Study Finds

Science Daily — Ethanol is widely touted as an eco-friendly, clean-burning fuel. But if every vehicle in the United States ran on fuel made primarily from ethanol instead of pure gasoline, the number of respiratory-related deaths and hospitalizations likely would increase, according to a new study by Stanford University atmospheric scientist Mark Z. Jacobson. His findings are published in the April 18 online edition of the journal Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T).

Using ethanol-based fuel instead of gasoline would likely increase the ozone-related death rate in Los Angeles by 9 percent in 2020, according to a new study by atmospheric scientist Mark Jacobson.

"Ethanol is being promoted as a clean and renewable fuel that will reduce global warming and air pollution," said Jacobson, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering. "But our results show that a high blend of ethanol poses an equal or greater risk to public health than gasoline, which already causes significant health damage."

Plus the fact we will starve a billion people because we won’t be able to feed them, and worst of all, I won’t be able to afford Doritos.

Ok, need more data to buy this, but if what is said on the surface is true, I find it sweet revenge for the dinosaurs that gave their lives for our current oil supply.

Ethanol was meant to be drunk, not burnt.

25 years from now, our kids will look back on all of this debate about ethanol and global warming the same way I look back at that pap they were selling about “The Population Bomb”.

Anyone remember that book?

By now, the planet should have about 18 Gazillion, and there should be riots over water. I know idiot Boomers who literally chose not to have kids because of that book and rue the decision to this day.

Of course, they were college educated in the 60’s and 70’s. Fed on a steady diet of leftist babble.

If the government wants to get interfere with the energy market, it may decide to build its own gasoline refineries and break the bottleneck on refining capacity. It’s either that or make it easier to build the refineries. Right now, why would the big energy companies build refineries? What’s the economic or political incentive, especially when gas is $3.12/gallon?

I guarantee the price of gasoline drops precipitously. I’m not worried about crude. As long is the price/BBL stays above $35, the folks extracting from shale and sand will soon be able to effect a price correction on crude - and lower our dependence on foreign oil at the same time.

In sum, due to its similar cancer risk but enhanced ozone health risk in the base emission case, a future fleet of E85 may cause a greater health risk than gasoline. However, because of the uncertainty in future emission regulations, E85 can only be concluded with confidence to cause at least as much damage as future gasoline vehicles. Because both gasoline and E85 emission controls are likely to improve, it is unclear whether one could provide significantly more emission reduction than the other. In the case of E85, unburned ethanol emissions may provide a regional and global source of acetaldehyde larger than that of direct emissions.

Or even that no dinosaurs gave their lives for the oil supply to begin with.

Tanstaafl. There is a price to everything, and every price can be objected to, while the real problems go unsolved, which is just as deadly in its own way.

In the Liberal world, every solution is a scenario of doom. It must really suck to be a Liberal:

Die from petro chemical pollution;

Die from from alky pollution;

Die from pollution displaced to the mining & manufacture of fuel cells, batteries, and extra power plants to charge them, and the recycling of the dead/worn out ones;

Die from exposure & starvation from not having an envirowhacko approved energy source;

Die from being doctored or medicated to death;

Die from no health care;

Die from being “inundated with cheap, readily available etc” guns;

Die from not being able to defend yourself, while the cops dither for hours trying to decide if it is safe to attempt saving you...and on and on.

Too bad people don’t die from being dead from the @$$-up; that would solve the Liberal/Envirowhack problem, with the added benefits of freeing up resources for the rest of us, and immediately reducing pollution by about half, and govenment spending by 2/3.
