What qualifies you to make such a statement?

American Idol is authentic Americana, even conservative Americana that celebrates excellance of individual accomplishment. It is highly successful because it appeals to viewers across a very wide age and interest spectrum.

It is in the mainstream of American network TV since the very earliest of days. It surpasses earlier talent show efforts by being interactive across the whole viewing audience.

The show recieves in excess of 35 million votes each voting night.Although many perhaps a significant nymber are duplicates and multiple duplicates, the number of votes is huge.

I would argue that it might be a cure for stuffiness. It may be too late in the season to recieve the full cure but watching the remaining shows, paying attention to the details of individuals might have some beneficial effect. The point is to have a little fun, enjoy life, reduce unnecessry sternness.

Apparently neither could he. He did a Bonnie Raitt song.

We're back! Votefortheworst.com was started in 2004 to support voting for the entertaining contestants who the producers would hate to see win on American Idol. Why do we do it? During the initial auditions, the producers of Idol only let certain people through. Many good people are turned away and many bad singers are kept around to see Simon, Paula, and Randy so that America will be entertained.

Now why do the producers do this? It's simple: American Idol is not about singing at all, it's about making good reality TV and enjoying the cheesy, guilty pleasure of watching bad singing. We agree that a fish out of water is entertaining, and we want to acknowledge this fact by encouraging people help the amusing antagonists stick around. VFTW sees keeping these contestants around as a golden opportunity to make a more entertaining show.

I now understand a little better why it's being done, but I do feel bad for this young kid, he will end up commiting suicide because of this someday.

I confess, this is one of my dumbest posts ever on FR. Why do I even care? I have no friggin' clue.

LOL. I don't either, but I read the thread anyway. Kinda like a train wreck.

Contrary to popular opinion though, I really do like watching the first few episodes of the season. I've laughed so hard on occasion that I fell out of my chair. I may have to tune in once for this guy though before he is voted off the island.

I was expecting Sangina to sing “Man, I Feel Like a Woman”.

a certain Spy magazine ... I'm betting that some other FReepers remember it, though.

I own it. A truly valued possession.

It was a mistake to ever let Sanjaya get to Hollywood - a really bad move by the judges.

The AI braintrust doesn't see it that way. The show generally stinks this season and ratings are down. The Sanjaya angle has been about the only buzz the show is getting and thus keeping it as water-cooler discussion.

I understand. Spy Magazine was never known for a large newsstand distribution, but I spotted that issue one day while on my lunch break. My boss back then had a magnificent collection of anti-Clinton goodies, so I snagged the magazine without a second thought. It was the last copy on the newsstand, and I resolved to go hunting for my own copy. However, the first four or five newsstands I checked were sold out, too.

The fellow who I gave it to absolutely treasures it. We're friends, though in different cities now. I was resigned to calling him up and requesting a scan of that cover, if asking here didn't turn up a copy. It's now my Windows wallpaper. :-)

Well, I was wrong. I thought Sanjaya (as bad as he was this week) would be safe. Not!

The Sanjiya Miracle is the most amusing piece of culture-jamming I've seen in years! I hope he goes all the way!
