I think they show what a comfort they are to each other in times like this.

I can't imagine how else he would hold up with all the pressure and pain of his job if he didn't have Laura.

I agree the contrast with him and the previous President is so great in so many ways and in particular when you look at the relationship that they have/had with their wives.
