NATURAL BRIDGE, Va. (AP) Must see. Spectacular limestone formation, good condition. Age: about 500 million years. Newer addition may need TLC. Asking $32.5 million.

The owners of Natural Bridge are putting the 215-foot-high landmark on the market, along with 1,600 acres that includes a hotel, gift shop, wax museum, caverns, hiking area and rock formation.

The arched 90-foot-wide span is a national and state historic landmark and is marketed as one of the world?s natural wonders, though it doesn?t make current lists. The Rockbridge County site draws about 200,000 visitors a year, according to the Roanoke Times.

The property is being sold because three of the eight owners are in their 80s, not out of financial difficulty, said David Kleppinger, executive director of the Rockbridge Partnership, a regional economic-development group.

Seems like the property should be redesignated
a National Park and turned over to the US Gov
Park System. It’s pretty obvious from the
pictures that the roads running and and on top
of it are NOT the responsibility of the present
owners. They eight families gotten their monies
worth out of Mother Nature at $12 a shot...time
to get philanthropic!

My family and I visited the Lexington area in 1995. We had a wonderful time at the Natural Bridge, and I’m pretty sure my son still has his Natural Bridge “pressed penny” in his dresser. :)

I agree, but the owners should be paid fair market value for it.

Let’s just do away with all property rights for scenic views.

How’s the view from your place?

I’ve visited there. That place is managed at least as well as National Park site.

I question whether all national monuments need to belong in government hands. Many historic caves are in private hands, for example, and get managed quite well.

I’m not a complete libertarian on this issue. We do need laws that forbid someone from destroying a designated national monument.

Legend has it that the initials "G.W." on it were carved by a young George Washington, who surveyed the property in 1750

Interesting how the Father of our country was also a vandal in his younger days.

The company I was working for in 1982 held it's summer picnic at this place. I never did make it over to the bridge that day. Now I wish I had while I could have done it for free.
