Makes one wonder why the Hiss Defenders are going through all this. What have they got to gain? Who cares? One, as Cincinatus pointed out, on Hiss they have placed their hopes to discredit the whole anti-communist movement.
Two, consider the status of current spies. If the Hiss defenders establish the perception that Hiss was improperly charged, or better yet that the real spy walked and Hiss charged in his place, then this provides ample ammunition to stop any current counterintel work.
Not that that matters. We've degraded ourselves to the point where top officials walking off with secrets in their pants get a slap on the wrist.

I heard about this a few days ago and was very doubtful that anyone had actually disproven the ALES = Hiss identification, but had never heard of Wilder Foote before. I'm glad someone has taken the time to set the record straight.
Nixon believed Chambers, which is one of the reasons the Left hated Nixon, and why they are still trying to prove that Hiss was framed.

What one believed, or at least publicly professed, about Alger Hiss’ innocence or guilt was a litmus test for the Left for 50 years. There are still some true believers who refuse to accept the overwhelming evidence of Hiss’ guilt because it would require that they acknowledge the lies and deceit they practiced or supported all those years.

The whole Hiss case brings to my mind the fact that for decades the identities of real communists in the entertainment, literary, and academia were kept hidden from the American public by fellow travelers or liberal sympathizers. I remember commie journalist I. F. Stone appearing on Dick Cavett’s show in the sixties. Cavett depicted Stone as being a stalwart critic of government. Not once did Cavett reveal that Stone was a hard-core Stalinist commie. The same with Lillian Hellman and Pete Seeger. In short communist influence was widespread on the American scene. And still is.

Google “pumpkin patch” + Chambers and click on the link headlined Westminster. This is a story in the Westminster Eagle, dated April 15, which incudes an embedded link to a PDF map showing the Chambers farm.

You make a great point:
the fact that for decades the identities of real communists in the entertainment, literary, and academia were kept hidden from the American public by fellow travelers or liberal sympathizers.
This cover has allowed the Left to freely operate in achieving their true goal, to destroy all the individual freedoms of all Americans, in the pursuit of absolute power.
