A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.
House Bill 1572 didn't get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws.
The bill was proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, on behalf of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Gilbert was unavailable Monday and spokesman Gary Frink would not comment on the bill's defeat other than to say the issue was dead for this General Assembly session.
Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."
Del. Dave Nutter, R-Christiansburg, would not comment Monday because he was not part of the subcommittee that discussed the bill.
Most universities in Virginia require students and employees, other than police, to check their guns with police or campus security upon entering campus. The legislation was designed to prohibit public universities from making "rules or regulations limiting or abridging the ability of a student who possesses a valid concealed handgun permit ... from lawfully carrying a concealed handgun."
The legislation allowed for exceptions for participants in athletic events, storage of guns in residence halls and military training programs.
Last spring a Virginia Tech student was disciplined for bringing a handgun to class, despite having a concealed handgun permit. Some gun owners questioned the university's authority, while the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police came out against the presence of guns on campus.
In June, Tech's governing board approved a violence prevention policy reiterating its ban on students or employees carrying guns and prohibiting visitors from bringing them into campus facilities.
Yeah!
Hincker needs to explain how safe the school population feels today, vs. yesterday!
His attitude aided & abetted today’s shooter at Virginia Tech.
One gun in that dorm could have saved many lives.
Muggers, rapists, & terrorists must be smiling today.
Utah has never had a school shooting.
I go to school in Baltimore, and have been doing the same for 3 years now.
there's yur tagline...
How happy is he now ??
These students could have defended themselves
I' m sure all the victims at VA Tech are feeling safer today....../sarc
Larry Hincker is a liberal fool. He and his university cops could not defend the students slaughtered today, and they certainly did not keep weapons out of the hands of the killer on campus. He ought to have his face rubbed in his foolish words of last year, and the university should be sued by the parents of the victims.
OK! Glad to know you’re safe in all this chaos.
Before coming to Virginia Tech, Hincker worked for 14 years in various corporate communications positions including manager of Public Information for a division of Westinghouse in Washington and employee communications manager for a division of Rockwell International. Hincker studied architecture, spent 10 years as a corporate photographer, has a bachelors degree from Brooks Institute, and an MBA from Virginia Tech.
Drunken college kids with loaded weapons? I don’t think so.
I carry mine in my computer bag. Never go anywhere without it.
If there are drunken college kids in engineering classes I doubt that they will be there long. We aren’t talking about parties on Friday night, we are talking about people being able to protect themselves in areas such as a school. Why be in one location where you can protect yourself and in another where you are a sitting duck?
Keep repeating :”Gun free zones make us safe”.
You may as well march to the gas chamber singing “Arbeit macht frei”.
Liberals will call for more gun control if these guys turn out to be white. If they are muslim, they will be silent in order to prevent the natural response of “Enough Muslims alrady”.
it’s terribly sad.
“I know the media will publish against gun availability”
Media Hoe on MnNBC already harping that “all it takes in Virginia to get a handgun, is a driver’s licence”.
On Fox, the balanced left handgun expert is talking about the MILLIONS of unlicenced hand guns AND MAGAZINES...here we go again.
You go, girl ! ;-)
I would not be surprised if the situation at Tech is similar.
