I’m now reading that the gun shop receipt(s) were in his back pack. That’s more plausible than as if he put them in his pocket.
But why would he take the trouble to obliterate the serial numbers on the gun and make sure he also carried no personal ID, yet keep the receipt for the gun in his backpack?
Doesn’t make sense, unless he just plain forgot that he still had the receipt.
