Your placement of the word "maybe" made trying the doors a factual statement, on your part.
Your original statement:
Maybe because when they tried the doors, they couldnt open them?
Everything about the above statement indicates that, in your mind, they tried the doors, for sure, no doubt about it.
If you had any doubt, you would have placed the word "maybe" before the word "tried," not before "because."
Furthermore, your inclusion of the word "when" seals the deal as well.
