April 16, 2007 -- Republican White House hopeful Rudy Giuliani will speak tomorrow at the university founded by televangelist Pat Robertson, a major appearance for the former mayor before a conservative crowd.
Several hundred people have registered to size up Giuliani, who holds liberal social views but is casting himself as the campaign's true "fiscal conservative."
He will be introduced at Regent University by Robertson - who in 2005 said Giuliani would make "a good president."

Despite Robertson's praise, Giuliani wasn't his first choice for the GOP nod. He mentioned the ex-mayor only after touting Sen. Sam Brownback as "a super guy" and Sen. George Allen as a former "distinguished governor and distinguished senator."
Robertson is keeping his options open, because he wants political access. The only candidate he really trashed was McCain, who called him names in 2000. He's got Romney coming to speak at the university as well.
I didn't say a thing about Bill Gates.
Don't forget 2,000 pound leg presses.
P.T. Barnum was a piker next to this lunatic.
Uh, “REV. PAT U” does not “extend” to “Pat Robertson University”.
In fact, the author of the piece was being snide calling it “Rev. Pat U”, and you simply made it into a meaningless name.
The actual name of the school is “Regent University”. There is no “Pat Robertson University”. It was silly to change the author’s snide headline into a meaningless one.
But that thread was started by anti-rudy people, and already had too many comments that were unrefutable against Rudy.
It is common practice for the Rudy people to re-post articles when discussions are started the “wrong way”, in order to grab some level of control over the conversation.
They also change the headlines I suppose in the hopes nobody notices the repost, and to possible throw other posters off the scent so that they don’t get anti-rudy people into the new thread.
It’s amazing how often this happens.
Yes, Christians should just shut up about anything political, and just sing their hymns.
Agreed. There is no “Pat Robertson University.” FWIW, I earned two master’s degrees from Regent University back in the 90s. If you apply yourself, it can be a wonderful school.
Listen if I did all those things then this would have been deleted. Apparently your argument doesn’t cut it. You guys cry wolf a bit too often.
Having a private meeting with Pat Robertson would be “kissing up”. But these are college students attending Regent University, and it makes sense for candidates to speak to them, as many will be voting for President next year.
Why should students be cut off from hearing candidates just because they choose conservative colleges founded by controversal religious leaders?
Are people who attend Bob Jones University 2nd-class citizens unworthy of hearing a candidate speak?
That’s kind of what McCain said in Virginia in 2000, thus putting the final nail in his coffin. I still think if he hadn’t done that he might have pulled out the nomination.
You are exactly right.
It is sad to see FReepers ridicule a man who, like you say, has helped more people than probably all of FR combined through Operation Blessing and WorldReach and his generous donations (over $200 million).
He’s made some mistakes (just as I have), and has misspoken (as I have), but at his heart he’s a good and generous and intelligent man. The media have just made him out to be a fool, and we’ve for the most part bought the lie. See my “about” page for a first-hand look at Robertson.
The NY Post didn’t call it “Pat Robertson University”. That would just be silly and ignorant.
The NY Post headline writer was being the typical “witty” writer, and called it “Rev Pat U”. At least with that name it was clear the writer didn’t think that was really the name. I don’t know if they should be shamed or ridiculed for their failure to be funny, but they didn’t do it by mistake, that was the fault of the person who posted the article and tried to “clean up” the headline.
Only then, can we see what his presence in the Republican field does to Mr. Giuliani’s front runner status among republican voters.
Is Narses taking a break?
areafiftyone was just trying to clean up the headline. The "mistake" belongs to the NY Post.
It’s Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show!!
We tend to be polite folks. But it’s an exageration to say his welcome was “warmer” than Romney’s. I imagine other speakers would have the same complaint about your characterization.
Rudy did stick to well-worn conservative positions in his CPAC speech, which brought applause (as they would if said by Joe Leiberman as well).
One way to avoid booing is to avoid talking about things people disagree with you about. I imagine Rudy won’t mention any of his positions on a host of subjects, and will stick to terrorism and fiscal conservatism.
Has good ol' Bob Jones U. changed their racist policies?
If not, then I would submit that any candidate who speaks there should be laughed off the national stage.
Doubly so if the candidate happens to be catholic.
If only.
You did all those things. You reposted an article that was posted not 2 hours earlier, and you did so with a different headline. You also included the most pro-rudy excerpts you could.
I would note that one reason the site prohibits reposting is that doing so with different excerpts can easily violate legal agreements regarding how much we are allowed to excerpt. For example, if two people post the same Washington Post article, each with a different 300 words excerpted, we will be in violation.
And it’s not the first time rudy supporters have reposted articles that were first posted by others, with different headlines and with different, more pro-rudy excerpts.
