....Rudy Giuliani will speak tomorrow at the university founded by televangelist Pat Robertson, a major appearance for the former mayor...who holds liberal social views....Giuliani made his sharpest case for moving beyond social issues this weekend in Iowa, telling The Des Moines Register, "Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we're for, not if we're a party that's known for what we're against." Asked about abortion, he said, "Our party has to get beyond issues like that." Giuliani upset conservatives - and surprised supporters - by saying he favored public funding for abortion....His campaign quickly noted he wasn't proposing changes to current federal laws.

See my post #98.
I entered this thread to add to the mix of variables the impending mooting of abortion by technology. My intention was to preemptively warn of spinning wheels and mistaken destinations: Abortion will soon transmute into something quite different; it will become truly private and seemingly beyond the reach of constitutional redress.
Well, we all thought the same thing about 'eminent domain' too.
And look what happened witha Roberts USSC.
I would prefer someone other than Giuliani choosing the next SC Justice.
I have zero confidence in him keeping his word to appoint "strict constructionists", given his position on federal funding of abortions.
If it comes down to the election being between Rudy and Hillary I’ll vote for whomever the Unity ‘08 Party nominates.

Me too!
I would love to see the Student Body at Pat’s University turn their backs on Rudy during his speech. That would really embarrass Pat; as well it should.
And I happen to believe only Rudy can win.
I think Rudy is one of the least likely to win. Here's why -
The Republican base will be split on Rudy, once the majority realize his positions on gun control, abortion, gay marriage and his overall socially liberal policies.
Then there's the media, who will turn on Rudy in the general election, and give him both barrels of their attack mode, further alienating the base, and possibly independents.
Now take into account this historical fact. Once the Republican candidate is chosen,he tends to shift his positions to the left some, attempting to pick up votes from the independents and undecided.
Meanwhile, the Dem candidate is glorified by the media as he or she shifts to the right in order to secure those same undecided/independents.
The way I see it, Rudy is dead in the water.
The base is disillusioned, the media is in full attack mode and the ill informed moderate swing voter sees little difference between the two choices.
And then with a week or two left before the November election, the media releases it's "October Surprise".
Good bye Rudy, hello Hillary.
I think they have more class than that.
Dead silence would be as effective.
When you’re in a life or death struggle, “class” goes out the window.
And it’s highly unlikely he’ll take questions. I hope I’m wrong.
Great, let’s elect the people who stand for nothing and whose qualifications are that they anger the least people.
Let’s go with Mr. Rodgers and the current Miss America.

Great post!
What would we say about a guy who said “we have to get beyond that” if we were killing 4,000 ten year olds every day?
Yes, there aren't any other planks in the gOP platform except abortion, right?
If we were killing 4,000 ten year olds or thrity year olds in this country every day, would you say the gOP should just move beyond that issue?
How convenient (it would be for Giuliani). This guy just cannot be the R nominee. No doubt the party platform would be changed and no telling when or if we would get it back. Odd that a man appointed by Reagan and shown together in pictures with him, would be someone who threatens so much that Reagan accomplished.
I don't care what the polls currently say, Rudy's NOT the guy to do it. He will ruin the party AND he will NOT defeat the Democrats.
Making a big deal out of that sounds like something an old, gossipy woman whose entire life revolves around soaps and bingo would do. Not your best angle, imo.
Your only point that appears not applicable to other Rs as well is the R-base split. In the end, will the base come to its senses? Or will it place its de facto vote for the Stalinist?
I say the former. I have faith in the base’s undying self-interest if not its fundamental sanity.
Perhaps just as important, your analysis neglects to factor in the loss of message control by the campaigns and old media, witness the web-based viral ads.
Whereas hillary clinton’s announcement video is said to have gotten 12,000 views, the Obama-Apple ad mashup tonight exceeds 3,100,000.
(And which R will do better than Rudy anyway?)
