Illegal Immigrants and the Unemployment Rate (Vanity)

Posted on 04/15/2007 2:30:11 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

A thought came to me earlier.

I wondered if illegal immigrants are counted whenever the statistics of employment are tallied. If so...what would the unemployment rate look like if illegal immigrants were discounted from the final total.

It makes me wonder...anyone have any ideas?

Aren’t the unemployment figures calculated using new applications for unemployment benefits? Are illegal aliens allowed to collect unemployment? I don’t know for sure, so please don’t flame me if I’m wrong.

All I know is that my state has a 7% unemployment rate (8% in my county) yet there’s a spanish language “come to Michigan” campaign being run by some business and farming groups.

A couple of weeks ago I read a story posted here about some 80 illegals found in a Phoenix house after one of the illegals called a relative in Michigan because the coyotes wanted more money. The fact that they called a relative in Michigan tells me that they were headed this way.

Well, it is a question worth asking. IIRC, they are included in the national Census....

The illegal apologists always use the unemployment rate to excuse our insane attitude toward illegals. The fact is, "underemployed" is a better measure. If you have a job as a roofer, you have a job (or, a "yob" as your illegal counterparts would call it), statistically. However, because of wage depression, you cannot work 40 hours a week at that job, so you pick up other jobs to make do. It's a scam by the apologists.

Michigan congresswoman Candice Miller was pushing a resolution to have illegals excluded from census counts because they’re changing congressional district lines simply by being here.

Illegals can and do apply for and get unemployment bennies here in Kalimexifornia. What really stinks, is that they claim unemployment, even when their “seasonal” work dries up.

Anyway, I don’t know how an accurate unemployment rate is possible, given that much of the work done these days is under the table, completely off the books and immpossible to count by the Feds.

Of course they don’t dare keep statistics of how many people have been put out of work, or even completely out of a trade, because the work is now done by illegals.

As usual, black people come out on the bottom. When is the black community going to figure out that it is hurt the most by illegal and legal immigration?

Total employment: +335,000 (+0.23%)
Hispanic: +84,000 (+0.42%)
Non-Hispanic: +251,000 (+0.20%)
White: +446,000 (+0.37%)
Black: -166,000 (-1.03%)

Yes illegal immigrants are included in any unemployment calculation because the govt doesn’t make a distinction to status. I hear immigrants are a 4.5-6 percentage points factor in unemployment. Remove immigrants and actual figure is something like 8-10% unemployment.

In California, one applies for UI by telephone. Press 2 for Spanish and you will get to speak to a live operator sooner and the service is better.

There are two problems here. One is that illegal aliens will work cheaper than Americans. It’s not that Americans will not take the jobs illegal aliens take but that Americans will not take the jobs at the peon=level wages.

The second problem is that the loss of higher-paying jobs to the Pacific Rim countries have left many Americans unable to find jobs that pay the wage level that made the U.S. best place to work in the world.

Go figure.

My education was as a labor economics, and illegals are not usually counted as part of the statistics surrounding unemployment. One of the things I've always found interesting is how much demand for illegal workers are created by high minimum wages, intrusive regulation, and unions.

If a builder wants to save money he could just as easily pay Americans cash to work "under the table" but since illegals are here (by definition) illegally, they are less likely to report labor law violations.

In effect they become part of the black market economy, and that always grows fastest in a socialist environment.

Yes, the method of calculation was changed during the clintoon's administration. Many consider it not to be accurate. Sort of like the current bogus report from the government on inflation.

Are illegal aliens allowed to collect unemployment?

They could draw un employment if they were working under some sort of false papers.

There is inferior and cheap materials available in lieu of the regulated ones, using your logic, if enough builders felt like it, they can use unsafe and inferior materials for construction. After all why abide by safety regs if the bottom line does not justify it???? IF I CAN USE THE BOTTOM LINE TO JUSTIFY BREAKING ONE LAW, WHY NOT ANOTHER ONE. By the way, if the bottom line is good justification to break laws, why don’t we have the Red Chinese build the F-22 Raptor fighter, I hear they are willing to build it at a fraction of what our DoD contractors can, just send them the materials list and blueprint and the rest will be taken care off. After all everything is about the bottom line????

Well I'm not sure who's post you're reading, but I don't say that it's a justified phenomenon, only that it's likely the cause. If I say that people rob banks because they're after money, it doesn't mean that I think the best way to get money is to rob banks.

I don't approve of hiring illegals to do anything, in fact, I think the penalty for hiring an illegal should be 5 years and a $25,000 fine for each offense. Let's see how many illegals we have here after that.

With all that said though, I think we should allow 100 times as many legal immigrants from Mexico into the country every year. They should be required to have a job (sponsor) and not break any laws or their out. We should also do away with the minimum wage, and eliminate all social services (including free education) for anyone who isn't a citizen or permanent resident.

All the Mexicans I know work damned hard. If they'll willing to come here legally, and take care of themselves and their families, learn the language, and assimilate into our society then I'm happy to have them come.

They're entitled to the same chance that all the other immigrant communities have had. But they should get nothing for free. Put laws like these in place and you wont have to deport anyone, they'll go home on their own.

I don't see how "including" illegal aliens in unemployment calculations makes the rate higher, unless illegals are unemployed at a higher rate than legals. Yet most people gripe that they are all taking American jobs.

As I understand it, the unemployment RATE is computed by a survey that is supposed to attempt to include everyone that is here, and ask "are you working -- do you want to work." Thus (round numbers for ease) if 96 million out of 100 million legals are employed; and 9.6 out of 10 million illegals are employed, the unemployment rate is 4% either way. IF only half of illegals were employed, in the example, it would give an artifically HIGH unemployment rate of 9 million/110 million, or 8.2%, even though legals had only a 4% rate.

Of course, if you believe all 105.6 million jobs (in the example) would exist anyway, then evicting all illegals would lead to an unemployment rate of -5.6%
