Thompson Considered Strongest Potential Candidate (for President)
Political Insider ^ | April 13, 2007

Posted on 04/15/2007 9:03:34 AM PDT by Clintonfatigued

The National Journal asked its group of political insiders which potential candidates, if any, will emerge as a strong contender for president. The Democrats gave the following responses:

Fred Thompson: 46% * Al Gore: 24% Newt Gingrich: 12% Michael Bloomberg: 11% Chuck Hagel: 8% None of the above: 29%

On the Republican side:

Fred Thompson: 43% Al Gore: 21% Newt Gingrich: 15% Michael Bloomberg: 11% Chuck Hagel: 4% None of the above: 35%

*Insiders were allowed to vote for more than one person, so percentages add up to more than 100.

The indications that Fred Thompson is in grow stronger each day. I think we’ll know soon.

strongest contender in the general election? not a chance its Thompson. If he is the nominee, his electoral strategy is identical to Bush’s from 2000 and 2004. And we winning Ohio this time is going to be more difficult, as the republican “brand” there is badly scarred. Which means Thompson has to flip something like Wisconsin, and he has to hold the western states like CO and NV, against a Dem ticket that will likely have an Hispanic VP (Richardson). and he also has to hold Iowa.

Washington insiders are not as smart as they think they are.

No doubt you are correct.

But you have to read between the lines to determine that this is a poll of UNDECLARED candidates. People who have declared are not listed.

Yeah, sure, a-huh. Were they the same group of insiders who gave us Bob Dole?

Fred is an amazingly appealing person and he doesn’t have the ‘scary born again’ thing that Bush has. He will appeal more to moderates than Bush ever did. His folksy and up front command of the issues will attract voters that Bush never could.

Much of the conventional wisdom about the 2000/2004 electoral map will go out the window with Fred in the picture. He’s not going to win NY or CA, but states like WI MN and yes maybe even PA are going to be much more in play.

Noticeably missing—the frontrunner, Rudy Giuliani. On the other hand, such bigtime winners such as Chuck Hagel and Michael Bloomberg made the list. What a crock.

Thompson could maybe get a couple of blue states to flip. New Hampshire, Oregon, and Wisconsin could possibly switch. Thompson has been out of office for a couple of years, so he can’t be tied too closely to the Bush administration. Also, he could pick a running mate from the northeast.

By keeping an close eye on WI voting fraud, WI turns red. Recall the story a few years back that the city of MKE purged 100k voters for various illegalities AFTER the election of 2004. Assuming that only 25% of that 100k were "R" votes, WI is is/was a Bush state..

He definitely has this likability factor in his favor - more than any other candidate. This does play an important factor in elections.

Too many are jumping on Thompson’s bandwagon based on his TV/Movie roles.

He wasn’t that strong of a Senator. He was party-line on most immigration issues. He chaired the committee that wrote McCain’s CFR.

Too many are hoping actor Thompson is another President Reagan. He isn’t.

Those who advocate that Thompson’s strength is shown in is various tv/movie roles could say the same for all those others who have had strong tv/movie role. Heck, Harrison Ford single-handedly defeated a bunch of Russian terrorists who hijacked Air Force One last evening on TV. Maybe Harrison Ford should be the next president; he has played one on TV. Or even Alec Baldwin. Or Martin Sheen.

Thompson the politician just doesn’t seem that strong a personality. It will be interesting to see how he weathers the storm, should he announce.

Quite doable IMHO. NV will not go blue no matter how many illegals vote, CO is a Red state despite Boulder..
