--SNIP-- If you want a car that will get 100 miles per gallon of fuel, you can build your own right now. This plan is based on an idea I got from a friend, but it has worked in the past and will work again. The idea is this. Start with a small car that weighs no more than about 2000 pounds. Many small sedans and hatchbacks from Honda, Toyota, Ford, Geo, Suzuki, Nissan, and the like are available. It must have a standard transmission and a good clutch. Next, throw out (remove and sell) the 80 hp engine it comes with and replace it with a 20 hp diesel engine. EPA certified engines in this range can be purchased from Yanmar. Then connect a belt-drive torque converter between the engine and the manual clutch. These simple transmission systems are used in snowmobiles, ATV's and Jet-Ski water craft, and are available in power ranges up to 120 hp.
As odd as this may sound, this system will give the following performance. First, mileage will be above 60 mpg in the city and close to 100 mpg on the highway. Second, for town driving, you can just stick the standard transmission in 3rd gear and drive around without shifting, just using the accelerator and brakes. Acceleration is peppy and smooth with your new, infinitely variable automatic transmission (torque converter). Third, out on the highway, speeds of 70 mph and 80 mph are still possible without a problem. The only performance compromise is found in climbing long, steep hills. The car can handle them with ease, but may slow down to 60 mph or 55 mph during the climb. This is a small price to pay for the other benefits. --SNIP--

Sure, weekend project.
Got a compact car?
Start tearin’ it apart. ;)
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Well right now I’m in midst on constructing a pace-maker out of parts from radio shack, so I’ll have to put this on hold until after a successful implantation.
It sounds insane.
hmmm...my roomate just got a new Pontiac Vibe...maybe I can convince him to tear apart his old Plymouth Colt and do this...:D
Sure. It'll cost $4,000 and you'll save $3000 in gas costs.
Oops.
I did this project last summer. I built a vw sandrail 1600cc engine, weighs 1260 #’s and gets 57mpg. I can drive around all week on $10 in gas. Sucks when it rains though. If my server would let me login to my account I’d post a pic.
And all the $$ you save can be used to replace the engine block when it cracks!!!
Sounds interesting. I don’t like that the site is called “Free-energy.ws”. Tanstaafl.
I think I would rather just have a 200 mph car.
Don’t know...but if it did, it would likely sell already built. America isn’t going to do it by itself...we’re lazy enough as it is.
Even better best....bolt on an electric motor up front so converting to electric drive...(smooth....) then install the diesel at back to charge the batteries....so when you get home and are done charging the batteries hook up to the house grid and run that electric meter backwards....
There are kits available to convert a stick shift VW Golf to electric drive.
Use cod-liver oil with premium gas...never tried it...
but if you believe in the oil in cod..it is a nice way
to get oiled up..or down? JK
What about kits for Yugo’s?
Actually, I find it kind of a fun idea. BUT, good luck in making it legal for the roads.
I have a gas powered 4 wheeler. It’s a 2 seat Prowler by Artic Cat. This thing will run for days on very little gas. I don’t recommend going very fast with one of these, but I’ve had it up to 56 mph. I’ve been told that there are places in Arizona that folks can actually drive around town in one of these. Unfortunately, not where I live, in this dumb state of Washington.
During our snow this last winter, I was all over with it. I was able to help out a few neighbors when the power was out, and check the roads out before I got the John Deere out of the barn to clear their drives off.
You know, some guy is going to build one of those cars and make a ton of money, even if he simply sells them one at a time.
You too?
He’s dead Jim.
