Robert Ostrum, chief of orthopedic trauma surgery at the hospital, said the governor will need more surgeries, probably tomorrow and Monday, because of the femur fracture that pushed the bone through the skin of his leg.

Doctors inserted a metal rod in his bone and fastened it in place with screws. But they did not put a cast on his leg or close the wound. For now the leg is wrapped in a bandage because they will have to surgically cleanse the wound to prevent infection from setting in.

“He has responded well, but he does have significant injuries,” Ostrum said last night, also describing the governor’s ailments as “multi-system injuries.” The doctor said Corzine faces months of physical therapy.

Broken ribs at that age is deadly and is a very difficult and long recovery. Not only painful, but likely aspiration pnumonia, lung damage, infection, etc...

Best wishes to Corzine and his family.

No fun at all! When I was 7 I was hit by a car and suffered a concussion and a complete fracture of my right femur. I was in the hospital for a month and in a cast for 3 months, followed by physical therapy to relearn how to walk.

The femur is the largest bone in the body and carries a lot of blood. A broken femur often means death within minutes from blood loss.
