Fred Thompson public schedule ramping up
MSNBC ^ | 4-12-07 | Joel Seidman

After disclosing Wednesday that he has lymphatic cancer, former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson, perhaps best known for his TV role as District Attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's "Law and Order," is accelerating his schedule of public appearances.

Advisors say this reflects his growing seriousness about entering the race for the White House.

On Friday morning Thompson is scheduled to attend the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington. He will be there with his wife Jeri at the Washington Hilton's ballroom event. President Bush will be there to make remarks.

A Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll released Wednesday indicates Thompson, who has yet to announce his candidacy, has risen to #2, ahead of Arizona Senator John McCain.

*snip*

Next Wednesday some 40-50 GOP House members will meet privately with Thompson at the Capitol Hill Club to urge him to enter the race.

The Hill event is being designed by Tennessee republican Rep. Zack Wamp. Wamp tells NBC, in a telephone interview, that Thompson, "appears to be someone who may be running for president." Wamp adds that the media will have an opportunity to cover some of the get together.

Wamp says Thompson is "not a hard-core conservative, not a bomb thrower, not an ideologue" but someone who can appeal to the majority of Republican voters.

How electable will Fred be after his cancer announcement? Will conservatives vote for Fred? I applaud him for making this very private situation very public BEFORE he starts his campaign.

Deep in my brain, I know that Fred is too good to be really true, but I can’t wait until he announces.

How can this be? The Rudy people have told me he has cancer and therefore cannot run and that FairOpinion guy says he has no chance because Rudy’s beating him in the polls. Then there are the other guys trying to tell us he’s pro-choice. And you ARE aware that he campaigned for Lincoln Chafee, yes?

Sheesh...what’s a FredHead to think!!! lol

RFR!!!

I thought the reason people here support him is because they are under the impression that he IS a hard-core conservative. When are they going to admit they've been had?

Oh .. that was a must as he considers this most critical
decision, and he plainly said he was doing it to gauge the
reaction to this news. Did you see his interview with
Neil Cavuto? He was wonderfully and elegantly honest.

No, I didn't see the interview. If Fred is as conservative as I hope he is, he should do quite well.

Most of us aren’t looking for a hard core conservative, we’ll give on some things. With giuliani, it’s totally giving up on everything.

IF Mr. Thompson is waiting to announce until he knows whether or not he'll still have his acting job, then I would find that EXTREMELY disturbing. That'd be like saying, "well, I'd like to be President, I feel I could do the job pretty good, America might need me, but ya see, I got this acting gig and if it goes well.....well, I just won't have the time to play President in real life." (to the flame-throwers in the group, notice I said, "IF", in BIG CAPITOL LETTERS in my first sentence)

Among republicans polled, 29 percent prefer former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, 15 percent favor Thompson, while only 12 percent prefer McCain, who once led the pack.
