I have never heard a white say “nappy”. I learned it from black friends.

I’m still waiting for someone to explain what “nappy” means. I’d never heard of it before this.

I used to have “nappy” hair when I was kid and it grew straighter as I grew older - and I am white. I want my “nappy” hair back!!!! It is the best hair. It is strong and tough.

I’ve been referring to my oldest son as ‘my nappy-headed kid’ for years. The other son has board-straight hair. Earliest exposure to the term I trace to working with sewing patterns & fabrics.

"That was really what offended them," Williams said. "Why is it that nappy-headed offends us so much, when being nappy-headed or having a tight curl pattern is natural to us?" he said. "Why do we still perceive nappy as being something negative?"
Oh. THAT'S what it means.

(From now on, ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put.)

I have never heard a white say nappy. I learned it from black friends. I'm white and I've used the term for years! Only I've never called anyone a "nappy-haired ho" - I've always used the term "nappy-haired b$t@h" (only when deserved, of course)
Growing up in Detroit might have something to do with my colorful language.
