You quoted McCain as saying, Before I left for Iraq, I watched with regret as the House of Representatives voted to deny our troops the support necessary to carry out their new mission. Democratic leaders smiled and cheered as the last votes were counted. What were they celebrating? Defeat? Surrender? In Iraq, only our enemies were cheering." It's worth contrasting that with Giuliani's position:
But in discussing the deployment of more troops, Mr.Giuliani has been alone in saying that such a strategy may not succeed, potentially providing him cover should the situation in Iraq deteriorate further. And he has put the strategy in a broader context that plays down the importance of Iraq. Terrorists "are going to continue to be at war with us, no matter what the outcome in Iraq," Mr. Giuliani said recently in New Hampshire. The night before, he said that "there are no sure things, "and that if the United States fails in Iraq, "we have to be ready for that, too." In California a few days later, speaking of "the danger of focusing on Iraq too much," he said that complete success there would not win the fight against terrorism, and that failure there would not lose it.
Giuliani has a hawkish image which does not seem to be entirely deserved.
ME: Well, nothing Giuliani said is necessarily objectionable on the merits, but I take your point: he is providing himself more wiggle room than McCain. Romney is basically striking the same tone as Giuliani, by the way.
there is nothing at all in this statement - except common sense. you think success in iraq is a lock? its not up to us to make it succeed - ITS UP TO THE IRAQIS. and so far, I’m not that impressed with the iraqis.
so Rudy is right - if the iraqis fails - our war on islamic terror to secure the United States - goes on anyway.
Hmmm.
The guy has been picked to pieces, and every pro argument has been shot down. It’s long past time to stop saying the repeated lie that he’s anywhere close to being a conservative.
Profiles in courage?
Oh, look who the cat dragged in. What was it this time — a week’s suspension?
Yeah, one of your rudy buddies is a mod. Two of them, actually, i know who they are.
profiles in common sense and an understanding of reality.
the surge is giving the iraqis their (final) chance to secure their country. they may not be able to do it. if they can’t, some new strategy is going to emerge. but whatver that might be - the point is the the US’ war on terror, goes on.
Sure.
I’ll note this, since you posted to me, I saw what you posted that got you suspended for a week. It wasn’t terribly different than what Imus called those girls.
Seriously....did Rudy really say this?
I was assured he is the only one who can win the war on terror?
Yes, it was very different, but we know you lack the comprehension skills to differentiate.
Is that the Rudyphile spin for how WEAKNESS=STRENGTH and SURRENDER=VICTORY?
Pinglists please!
But then again, the original article was posted in February.
Haven't heard a peep...
what would you rather a candidate say? would it be better to say if the iraqis ultimately cannot stand up and secure a unified iraq, the US war on terror is lost. baloney, if the iraqis cant secure iraq - some new strategy will develop, but US security will not be put at the mercy of the iraqis ability to secure themselves.
And of course you’d say that to try and redeem yourself. Carry on.
I’m just enjoying the heck out of Rudy’s 61% approval ratings nationwide.
Fierce On. Fierce Off.
Nah, he aborted himself :)
