USA today is Link only
If McCain is the nominee, I will support him, albeit with my eyes wide open. He will be vilified by the press as soon as he accepts at the convention.
I don't forget how many things he has done to stab the President in the back. I consider him disloyal to the party and the President on many things, but he has always supported the war and the military, and for that reason alone he would be head and shoulders above ANY democrat who will run.
That's right! There have been times in the last 6 years when I'd get so angry at McCain that I'd scream. But he has always been a supporter of the President as far as the war is concerned and he has never backed down in that support.
There are very few men who can really appreciate what McCain suffered at the hands of the North Vietnamese. He never broke. He was a patriot then and is one now. I probably won't vote for him in the primary but if he is our candidate in the general I will support him without hesitation.
This is what he has said all along, it is nothing new. Any of the other Republican Senators could have and should have given this speech. They did not, they will not. After opposing him for 25 years I may just vote for the son of a birch.
Most of our candidates say and do a mixture of right and wrong. Of course, we have to form our overall opinion on the sum total of their deeds... good and bad... then and now.
All too often, we don't give credit when credit is due... and we should.
I'd hope that others applied that to me as I work through tough issues.
mccain showed something here with this speech. finally someone said what needed to be said. i just cant believe the usa today printed it.
McCain may not be the most loved candidate among conservatives because he stabbed the President so many times in the back on other issues, but on the War he is one of the strongest supporters and because the War on Terror is the most important issue of our time, we should be grateful for Senator McCain and his steadfast support for the War. Only a minority of Patriots is supporting the war and he is one of them.
WHAT THE HELL.. what MODERATOR is removing text for a PUBLIC TEXT TRANSCRIPT?????
Jim you need to get your mods under control, this is rediculous.
Doesn’t matter if the TRANSCRIPT is at USA TODAY or CSPAN.. its a PUBLIC SPEECH TRANSCRIPT, not a COPYRIGHTABLE DOCUMENT OWNED BY THE PAPER PUBLISHER!
I am not going to support McCain for the nomination, but if he gets it, I can now vote for him without holding my nose.
IMO, it is a day late, but not a dollar short.
I watched traitor Reid response to McCain speech on Brit Hume show last night. The low life could not come up with any response but invoked the Pope name and asked Senator McCain if he wants to debate the Pope on the War issue. This was one of the dumbest statements I have ever heard in my life.
If it came down to Rudy and McCain, I’m not 100% sure yet but I’m leaning more towards McCain. Like you said, he would be tough on our enemies. I hope I don’t have to choose between the two of them but at least with McCain I know what I’m getting ... warts and all. Rudy is questionable imo seeing that he’s only been elected Mayor and hasn’t held office since 2001. They are probably pretty close to being the same as far as their social liberalism goes. I just think McCain would be better in the WOT, not that Rudy wouldn’t be good also. Jeez... I really hope I don’t have to pick between these two jokers.
I went to McCain’s senate website and speech is not there. Went to USAToday and, if it’s there, I couldn’t find it.
Any links you could suggest?
You are wrong meandog. Indeed the vast majority of President Bush supporters on this forum have much less problems supporting Senator McCain than the Absolutists and Holier than You Conservatives.

That’s the same speech at the McCain web site...
I can’t believe a moderator here is deleting articles that are quotes from publishes speeches...
Jim Rob needs to educated his mods better.... USA TODAY cannot claim copyright on a transcript of a published speech by a political candidate.
He’s a hypocrite and an opportunist.
The Campaign Finance Reform is one of the most overrated Boogy Man laws in history. Some on our side have really abused the interpretation of this law and use it to attack President Bush for signing it and to attack John McCain for coming up with it. I doubt very much that this law has restricted free speech by any measure.
Nor am I biting. McCain understands the demoncraps as well as he does because he is one of them. Heed his words then elect a man that has the guts to stand up to both the demoncraps and terrorists.
Well well. McCain may have found his proper niche in this election cycle. Having been anointed the media’s favorite go-to guy, with them slavering over his every word for years, he is well-positioned to parlay their imprimatur into something far more useful than a futile presidential run. The media has conditioned the casual observer—the essential swing vote—to accept him as the voice of reason. This is a valuable chit, if he’ll use it properly. This speech is a great start.
Yeah, and he spends all the time in between such talks being as liberal as possible and putting down conservatism wherever he sees it.
He’s consistently unstable on everything he “believes”.
