Wednesday's South Park, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone parodied the Catholic League's Bill Donohue as a power-hungry Catholic Church official who overthrows Pope Benedict and jails Jesus for going against the Church. On last night's Scarborough Country, Donohue reacted to the show in a very surprising way given his track record of over-exaggerated outrage and violent rhetoric.
"Maybe I do come across too tough on TV. I thought it was hilarious and our staff thought it was hilarious. I said, listen, I said I have no defense except I'm gonna go with it."
Donohue's official statement can be found here. His "I have no defense" reaction speaks to the sheer genius of South Park. Anyone who watched the show knows they hit him hard for sometimes acting un-Christian, but the moral of the episode was one with which he couldn't have possibly disagreed. In case you missed it, check the ComedyCentral schedule here. It'll be rerun tonight through Monday
Come on, you have to laugh at that.
Donohue’s a good sport.
Yes, he’s always had a great sense of humor.
I’m surprised his wife let him watch it.
Very surprised at his reaction, especially at Kyle murdering Jesus. I turned it off at that point. Some sacrifices made in life just cannot be mocked.
SP ping?
Donohue usually comes across as angry and red-faced, so I’m a little surprised how he took this. Most of these professional grievance guys - CAIR, ADL, and Donohue’s group - seem cut from the same psychological cloth, if not the same ideology.
How can you be mad at a show when you are killed by Jesus throwing a ninja star at you? If you have to go out, that is a pretty good way to do it.
Screw Donohue. There are lots of good Catholics out there who aren’t rabid anti-Semites, why not give some of them some camera time?
And I can't think of any group they skewer harder than Catholic clergy.
Good for him. I’m not Catholic- but I respect him even when he goes overboard. He sticks to his guns!
Three cheers for Bill!
Now, what would be funny about parodying mainstream people who aren’t outrageous?
Actually, some of the funniest jokes I know are along the lines of
“Q:What does a caucasian man do when his car breaks down? A: He fixes it.”
Good for him :~)
Part of it was a parody on the DaVinci code. It was brilliant.
Please note - no boycott, no death threats:
The Catholic League. Better than Radical Islam.

SOUTH PARK LAMPOONS BILL DONOHUE
On last nights episode of the Comedy Central show South Park, Catholic League president Bill Donohue appeared as one of the cartoon characters, along with a figure of Pope Benedict XVI. The Easter script depicted Donohue chastising the pope for being too soft. Donohue then takes over as pope. When a Jesus figure appears, he has both the pope and Jesus arrested. After Jesus is killed by Kyle, he resurrects and kills Donohue.
Donohue commented on this today:
I have no idea why South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker caricature me as a heartless thug. In any event, I stand convicted and have no defense. Now I have to get back to businessI hear someone just took some liberties with the Easter Bunny.
It was Jesus's idea, and Jesus promised not to tell Eric Cartman that a Jew killed him.
