Gov. Eliot Spitzer signed a bill Monday moving New York's presidential primary to February 5 -- a change that could benefit the Democratic and Republican front-runners, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rudy Giuliani, both New Yorkers.
Nearly a dozen other states, including California and New Jersey, have already moved their primaries or caucuses to February 5 or are about to do so. About a dozen more are considering such moves, setting the stage for what is quickly becoming known as "Super-Duper Tuesday" just 22 days after the leadoff Iowa caucuses.
"Moving the primary date to February, we will help secure New York's large and diverse population an influential voice in selecting the 2008 presidential nominees," said Spitzer.
Democrat Spitzer's move is expected to mean a big early haul of national convention delegates for Clinton, a New York senator, and for Giuliani, a former New York City mayor. The two New Yorkers, respectively, lead national polls for the Democratic and Republican nominations.
New York had been scheduled to hold its primary on March 4 until Giuliani allies began pressing for the earlier date. The Clinton camp quickly gave its blessing to the move which won overwhelming approval from New York's Republican-led state Senate and Democratic-controlled Assembly last month.
"It's certainly good for both candidates from New York," said former state GOP Chairman William Powers, a co-chairman of Giuliani's New York campaign.
Bill Gardner, the New Hampshire secretary of state who sets the date for the traditional first-in-the-nation primary, said the move by New York and the other states likely means the entire nominating process will be over on Feb. 5. He called that "a rush to judgment" that might not be good for politics.
"It's going to be a big national event,"

Having New Yorkers decide the nominations is a very scary thought. Choose between two gun-grabbing abortion supporters.
The good news is that, although the clow car media has already chosen these two as their candidates of choice, they are smart enough to know that their ratings will suffer for a while after the nominations are a foregone conclusion. I expect the talking heads to spin the homefield advantage story early and often. I just hope red state America is informed enough to grasp the concept.
Personally, I believe that unless Fred gets into the race, Giuliani’s nomination is a forgone conclusion, as he will win Florida, California and most of New England. Romney and McCain will split the South West.
Between skipping debates (yes the republicans skipped one too) and early primaries, it tells me that the “front runners” are cowardly.
Agreed, but Fred Thompson will enter the race.
One other thought. If Rudy is the nominee, he may well succeed in finally peeling off a significant number of Jewish voters, and their $$$, from the Dems, which will, IMHO, have a huge impact on the WH race, and many other races. The Dems will cave to their hard left-anti-war caucus, and their innate anti-Israel, anti-semitic viewpoint. FYI..read Ed Koch’s column today on Real Clear Politics abotu the WoT..I’ll state flat out nowthat if the nominees are Rudy and Hillary, he’ll endorse Rudy..
Koch has already said he supports Hillary.
I think that’s for the primary..against Obama..
This tells me the DC power brokers want to ensure the election itself is irrelevant and we get back to the good old days where we had two “mee too” parties.
Not going to happen. For some reason, Jews (at least the Jews that I know in NY and Florida) are Hillary's strongest supporters. This in spite of the fact that she is BFFs with Yassir Arafat's wife, called an aide a "F-cking Jew Bastard!" and told Dick Morris "Money -- that's all you people care about is money."
As far as I am concerned, Hillary Clinton is to Jews as Jerry Lewis is to the French. I have given up trying to figure it out.
-—Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has made it clear that he’s not very fond of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and now Koch wants Republicans to know something or two about their front-running presidential candidate. He’s doing so by re-issuing his 1999 book, Nasty Man, along with some new comments about his successor.-—

Now both California and New York are in February. Giuliani is astutely managing the primaries so that he has all the early momentum. The man is a shrewd, competent administrator, you gotta give him that. He sets the table for himself ahead of time, while the conservative “alternatives” wait for their serfs to grovel some more.
I wish I shared your confidence.
He's got a pretty good job already. It would be a huge pay cut for him.
You may be correct. However, we shall see. I have a (sadly) unfortunate feeling that events yet to occur in the Mid-East will have a prodound effect on the 2008 elections.
I hear his contract expires at ABC on May 1. While he indeed would take a pay cut, do you really think that a man with an ego of any size, when showing such good polling numbers and is being begged by his party to run, would turn down the opportunity of a lifetime to serve as President of the United States? Even his wife has asked him to run, and usually that is the "personal reason" for not doing so. Anyway, Thompson has taken the second major step and is organizing a campaign staff, and is rumored by politico.com to be announcing in California on May 4th.
just a footnote: On May 1 we have another illegal immigration amnesty march scheduled by the open border socialists.
If that backdrop of invasion and anarchy can be harnessed with Hilary Clinton praising them and Guiliani’s past and presetn quotes it might be a more dramatic May 4.
(seriously I expect hilary to be missing in action on may first. She hides during bad photo ops.)
I think Casius Clay called it rope a dope. You let your opponent punch them selves out. Then you jump in the ring and clean their clock. I’m not concerned that Rudy is out early. I’m glad. Now he has to try and maintain on the same old tricks and slogans. The media will turn against him as soon as he even hints he might be getting a little tired and they will be quick to tout any one else that steps up. That’s what they have to sell. It’s what they do. It’s why Rudie will lose.
He's speaking at the Reagan dinner on May 4th and the article says that there are no plans for an announcement at that time.
Also, he works for NBC...
In 2006, Thompson signed on with ABC News Radio to serve as senior analyst and vacation replacement for Paul Harvey.
As for his TV series, he does not work for the network NBC, he is under contract to the producers of the show.
As for his announcement, I am getting that from sources in Tennessee. It was “rumored” in an article on politico.com.
"Law and Order" is produced by Wolf Films and NBC-Universal.
ABC radio probably doesn't even pay his lunch money.
