The visit to the Middle East, and to Syria in particular, by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has provoked mixed reactions in the Arab world. Some wrote that Pelosi's visit challenged the foreign policy of the Bush administration, and that it had improved the U.S.'s image in the Arab and Muslim world. Others took a more skeptical approach, denying that the visit had made any major change. Still others were highly critical, and accused Pelosi of damaging the cause of democracy in Syria.
Syrian Journalist: Pelosi Has Opened the Door to a Syria-U.S. Dialogue
Pelosi's visit was well received in Syria. While a number of delegations of U.S. congressmen had come to Syria in recent months, due to her status this visit was understood to be a significant development that could initiate a Syria-U.S. dialogue.

The visit sends one [single] message - a message of the American people's challenge to the foreign policy adopted by the American administration...
Editor of Arab Reformist Website: "Shame on Ms. Pelosi!"
In an article titled "Shame on Ms. Pelosi for Shaking the Hand of the Damascus Hangman!" Omran Salman, the Bahraini editor of the reformist website Aafaq, wrote that Pelosi had turned her back on Syrian reformists and had harmed the cause of democracy in Syria:
"The only result that Pelosi achieved in visiting Damascus, and in sitting down with the Syrian president and shaking his hand, was to deliver a blow to the liberal opposition in Syria and frustrate reformists' hopes for change. By breaking through the ring of isolation [surrounding] Bashar Assad's regime, Syria advanced [several] steps towards repression and despotism, and the march of reform and democracy fell behind.

Pelosi insulting Ahwazi refugees in Syria
http://www.ahwaz.org.uk/2007/04/pelosi-insulting-ahwazi-refugees-in.html
US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Syria has been denounced by the British Ahwazi Friendship Society (BAFS) as an insult to Ahwazi Arab refugees currently living in fear for their lives in Damascus.
Pelosi met with Syrian Baathist dictator Bashar al-Assad in an effort to showcase her Democrat party’s agenda on foreign policy. This came at a time when al-Assad is ordering the arrest and deportation of Ahwazi Arab UNHCR-registered refugees, in violation of international law (click here for report). According to media reports, Pelosi did not address the Baathist regime’s human rights record in her meeting with the Syrian dictator.
Ahwazi refugees are being hunted down in Damascus and a number have been detained and deported to Iran. On their arrival in Tehran, the refugees are arrested, held in solitary confinement in Section 209 of Evin Prison and tortured to the extent that they cannot walk and suffer injuries to internal organs (click here for report). The Syrian security forces have placed the UNHCR’s office in Damascus under surveillance, forcing refugees into hiding.
BAFS spokesman Nasser Bani Assad said: “Pelosi is a disgrace. She did not confront President Bashar al-Assad on human rights violations and Syria’s breach of international law by deporting refugees under the UNHCR’s protection. Her cosy meetings with this hated dictator brought legitimacy to a corrupt and despotic regime at a time when it should be confronted on state terrorism and its human rights atrocities.
“Pelosi and the Democrats have no interest in human rights and don’t care about the people suffering under the Baathist regime, who include Ahwazi Arab refugees who have fled from persecution, torture and execution in Iran. Pelosi doesn’t impress anyone.”

HRW calls for release of Ahwazi refugees in Syria

Dear Mr. Omran Salman.
Democrats do not support democracy for Iraq, so why the surprise?
That editor must be reading my mind.
Why in the he!! do foreigners understand this more than domestic voters?
Excellent point! This criticism of Pelosi should be all over the news here.
Because our alphbet (drive-by) media HIDES THAT INFORMATION FROM THEM.
Now I understand why the MSM leaves me scratching my head.
They are driven by Democrat mindset.
They share the same understanding as Democrat politicians.
Did Nancy swing by Lebanon and visit the family of the late prime minister?
Truth be told, to Islamic societies she is a mere woman, so who cares what she thinks?, But she is a useful idiot for their cause.
I’ll give her credit for knowing that a mere woman must not appear in the presence of men without a head covering.
Exactly!!
Keep the “little people” blind, dumb, and without the truth. This way the dems/media can say anything, do anything, and the public is too dumbed-down to figure it out.
The dems/media must tote a disdain for the Internet, don't you think?
It gives her a personal goal to strive for.
In fact, the MSM are the marketing arm of the DNC.
I'm totally shocked by that revelation! /s
How long before it is common knowledge for crying out loud?
Yes, I do think! They really hate the fact that we can disprove just about everything they say.
They hate it because for so many years they have been able to spew their junk with NO CHALLENGES - and now .. they can’t do that anymore.
This totally explains why there is much discussion about imposing the “Fairness Doctrine” AGAIN - SO THEY CAN SHUT US UP.
Pelosi Proclaims Self Americas Prime Minister
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), self-proclaimed most powerful woman in the world, presented herself to Syrian President Bashar Assad as Americas virtual Prime Minister in a bid to build the bridges called for in the Iraq Study Group report. I explained to President Assad that while President Bush is still nominally the American head-of-state he has been reduced to a largely ceremonial role now that my party controls both houses of congress, Pelosi said. President Assad agreed we need a new direction in American foreign policy. I felt there was some real bonding going on.
Assad welcomed Pelosis visit and expressed hope that they could work together on matters of mutual interest. I am confident that Speaker Pelosi and I share similar views on a wide range of issues, Assad declared. I think we both agree that Mr. Bush is a destabilizing influence in the Middle East and see the need to neutralize that influence.
Pelosis donning of the hijab (a head scarf prescribed by the Quran for the protection of feminine modesty) garnered widespread praise in the region. This prominent American female has shown a willingness to take a first step toward Islam, said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I said the Americans must change their behavior and mend their ways. I have told them what they have to do, and I am glad to see that the American Prime Minister is beginning to comply. We can only hope this is a harbinger of the greater transformation yet to come.
In related news, Pelosis inquiry regarding Saudi Arabias lack of female politicians was laughed off by Saudi officials. The women in our country are not whores, Prince Farsic al-Saud, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs snorted. They are at home tending to their families.

You make a thoughtful point, but what does this say of their opinion of Secretary Rice? Wouldn’t they, on some level, view her with equal disdain and dismiss much of what she says? I don’t think that misogynists view any one woman as different from another.
