"...but he “saw the light” many years ago and really became a model of his faith in God."

Agreed.

I have a copy of an old 70's B.C. book, "A Clam for Your Thoughts". Full of cute but completely secular bar humor, it was completely different than the cartoon it is today. {And still funny} It is indeed a testimony to the power of God to change us.

How fitting that Johnny Hart is called home during Easter. On Easter and Christmas, You expected an interesting and colorful 'toon from "B.C."

Heaven is richer, We are poorer.

From the website:

Johnny tells an interesting story about how he came to the Lord.

‘Salvation? The reason Jesus died? Grace? These are things I didn’t know. The first thing had to be—which is exactly what you guys [at Creation magazine] are doing—to be convinced that the Bible is the Word of God.’

He had moved with his wife Bobby to a town called Nineveh in New York— ‘A little, one–horse town up above Binghamton’. One day he bought a satellite dish for their house and another for his studio.

‘These guys were out here wiring up for a couple of weeks, and they were born-again Christians. They used Christian TV as a test pattern, so every time I walked through the room in which they were wiring up a TV set, I’d see this and say, “Is that the only thing we are going to get?”

‘They’d say, “Oh, we’re sorry.” And I’d say, “Just kidding.” So I was listening to the preaching coming from the TV set and eventually became fascinated by it. One day my wife said, “Do you want to go to church?” I said, “Certainly.” Now we teach Sunday school and do all sorts of things. I have a lot of fun drawing for the children.’

I had the same thoughts reading this. His strong Christian faith showed through many of his strips, and he was not ashamed to acknowledge his faith. Therefore Christ was not ashamed to acknowledge him on Johnny’s arrival before the Father.

“’I’ve seen some ugly chickens in my life, but that Buck Backaw takes the cake.’”

Speaking of chickens, this one was my favorite:

Peter: “I’ve just invented ‘chicken’!”
BC: “What does it taste like?”
Peter: “EVERYTHING!”

Sad news, indeed. One of the few cartoonists worth reading. As someone said earlier, our loss is heaven’s gain. RIP Johnny. You will be missed down here in the twilight zone.

that is the most appropriate response. I wonder how many times he’s used RIP in his strips? I remember quite a few.

RIP Mr. Hart - we’ll miss you!

Interesting to see this strip. My newspaper chopped the first two panels and all I saw were the bottom two rows. I’m sure that the folks at the newspaper thought it wouldn’t matter to drop the first two panels, but it adds to the strip (and, more importantly, is part of Hart’s work).

It’s awfully irritating to see the papers really mess up some of these strips by limiting to a certain number of panels, space, etc. I sure can understand why Bill Watterson told all the newspapers to take a hike when he quit Calvin & Hobbes over stuff like this.

Whether you are a Christian or not, you cannot but admit this man was a unique American cultural icon.

Disappointing for us he has passed on—but certainly not for him!

I did enjoy B.C. Great cartoon, and Johnny Hart was an icon. In some ways, its the end of an era.

Johnny Hart was a good guy - an unabashed Christian and a man I admired for his stand

Kind of an offbeat story about him, if anyone is interested. Two years ago, my daughter's softball team was playing a team from NY with the oddest looking logo on their shirts and shorts - sort of a whirly character. We asked one of the girls if we could see it up close and it looked like the little caveman dude from B.C.swinging a bat. She told us that Johnny Hart had designed their logo and was a major supporter of their team.

I just thought it was sweet that someone who obviously didn't have a child on the team still supported the sports of his hometown.

That he did. The BC Open golf tournament which ran from 1971 to last year 2006 had this logo and the trophy was similar.
