Sopranos begins its swan song
Edmonton Journal ^ | 04/07/07 | Alex Strachan

It's never over till it's over" goes the familiar refrain. This time, though, it's truly over for The Sopranos.

The quintessentially American family epic raises the curtain on the first of its nine final episodes tonight. The final aria will be sung June 10. The final scene was filmed in a wholesome family ice cream parlour, in Bloomfield, N.J. and includes James Gandolfini's gangster don and family man Tony Soprano, Edie Falco's pragmatic -- and legit -- mob moll Carmela Soprano and Tony Sirico's immaculately coiffed capo Peter Paul Gualtieri, a.k.a. Paulie Walnuts, a movie buff and debt collector given to saying things like, "I was born, grew up, spent a few years in the army, a few more in the can and here I am, a half o' wise guy."

Last night’s premiere wasn’t very encouraging that this season will be any better.

Well, all of you obviously want to be left alone to discuss your favorite destructive TV show, so I will not post further here. But in parting I say, I am no kook but a sincere American father. Middle America is on my side, not “turned off” by my views, which are good traditionalist views based on my morality and faith. Of course my children don’t watch the Sopranos. But shows like the Sopranos, by upping the ante on violence and sexuality and profanity and blasphemy, and the audience and MSM critics that reward this filth, have made it nigh impossible for wholesome entertainment to be found in America. Imitating the Sopranos has lead to free cable shows such as the Shield which is in its way even more pernicious and anti-America. And broadcast networks have also followed. I am ashamed and mobilized to action. So you kids have fun discussing your naughty tv show while you still can but know that there are those of us who are working everyday to clean up our airwaves and bring back decency, and we will prevail.

OK, what is the deal with hollow point ammo? Is it illegal in NJ?

He also dropped the gun in the hall way, and he didn’t have gloves on. Bobby is screwed.

You're either a troll or a blithering idiot.

Or DU troll trying to make conservatives look stupid and authoritarian.

Come to think of it, would someone as fundy as him have "xtian" in his name?

One initiative we need in this country is to restore Hays Code standards to movies and extend them to cover all forms of broadcast media such as cable television. Under the Hays Code, the Sopranos would be banned for its profanity, sexual perversion and most importantly for glorifying criminality and depicting evil not being punished swiftly and surely.

Nobody's making you subscribe to HBO.

I want more films such as the wonderful Christian sports movie “Facing the Giants,” showing the power of faith in our children’s lives, to be made

Then make them. Too many people seem to think only "Hollywood" is capable of making entertainment products. Raise money. Hire writers. Hire a director. Hire a crew. Bring the finished product to market. If people want your product, they'll buy it.

Yes you are correct, and I think as soon as he’s nailed he will turn states evidence on Tony.

And now that it’s in syndication on A&E, I can finally watch it without giving money to HBO. I bought a boxed set of the second season because it was in the $5 bin, just to see what the hubbub had been for all those years, and it was actually pretty good. I find it kind of a black comedy, not a “glorification of gangsters”, as some prudish bible-beaters seem to think. The mafioso are all stupid, no-class cretins, and Tony Soprano and his wife actually remind me of Fred and Wilma Flintstone. I think of the whole show as a comedy, not some “dark drama” as the critics and ads claim. IMHO it’s a hoot.

So you define “troll” as anyone who doesn’t approve of vulgar and destructive entertainment? That’s interesting.

Let me see,you came on Freerepublic with a screed about how we need to go back to the bluenose Hays code, that if taken literally would ban allmost every movie from "Star Wars" to "The Guns of Navorone" to " Saving Private Ryan" to "Ghost Busters" and on and on and you posted this drivel under a name like "onward_xtian_soldier"
your either a troll/disruptor or a bluenosed wowser.

"Yes you are correct, and I think as soon as he’s nailed he will turn states evidence on Tony." Of course, I had the same thoughts about the torn shirt and the gun -- I think it was pretty obvious -- but it will be interesting to see how all the international / extradition stuff works out, since he killed the guy in Canada. The more interesting question is why Bobby was so careless. Is he that stupid? Maybe. Or, is he sick of life in the family, being under Tony's thumb, etc, and looking for a way out by botching a crime and getting sent to prison for life (surely Canada doesn't have the death penalty)?

Under the Hays Code, the Sopranos would be banned for its profanity, sexual perversion and most importantly for glorifying criminality and depicting evil not being punished swiftly and surely. And that other show someone mentioned, the Shield, would be banned for showing our brave policemen as corrupt and violent. I pray for that day, and others should join me.

Yeah! Amen, brother! And while we're at it, let's toss out that stupid, outdated constitution thingy, too, because all it does is let people be free, and that kinda thing is sinful and wrong!
