Sopranos begins its swan song
Edmonton Journal ^ | 04/07/07 | Alex Strachan

It's never over till it's over" goes the familiar refrain. This time, though, it's truly over for The Sopranos.

The quintessentially American family epic raises the curtain on the first of its nine final episodes tonight. The final aria will be sung June 10. The final scene was filmed in a wholesome family ice cream parlour, in Bloomfield, N.J. and includes James Gandolfini's gangster don and family man Tony Soprano, Edie Falco's pragmatic -- and legit -- mob moll Carmela Soprano and Tony Sirico's immaculately coiffed capo Peter Paul Gualtieri, a.k.a. Paulie Walnuts, a movie buff and debt collector given to saying things like, "I was born, grew up, spent a few years in the army, a few more in the can and here I am, a half o' wise guy."

“I consider myself a religious fundamentalist, but I agree with you about government intrusion. TRUE religious (Christian) fundamentalists believe in the free will of man, and less government.”

I smell an Arminian/Calvinist debate coming on...

It will turn out that Tony is messed up because he had to commit patricide to become a made man.

Tony dies, but as punishment for his sins gets reincarnated as the ultimate form of evil: Newman from Seinfeld : )

There is only 1 way it can end, I think. The bad people die.

One thing I admire about The Shield, it has always been careful to show the bad people, who do good things, as bad people. In the end, Vic dies.

I am proud to say that I have never seen a single episode and am not suffering from withdrawal.

Its confusing to watch A&E when HBO ran a rerun a couple weeks ago and now the new season is starting.

Not as painful as the last season and a half have been.

What didn't you like about the last season and a half? Some of the episodes are like a work of art...Like looking at a painting in the Louvre. It only looks pedestrian. You don't know how brilliant it is until some Art Professor tells you what it's about.

The "Hotel California" (my lame title)episode last year where Tony wakes up in a Hotel room after he's been shot by Uncle Jr. was the best episode ever if you get it. Tell me you don't get it. I didn't either at first.

This is why the Republicans became a minority party.

Well, sort of. Corruption, the Iraq War and abandoning their belief in limited government had something to do with the short term loss last November too.

But longer term, you are correct. This nonsense from the Crusader/Christian soldier and bans on a guy playing poker in his pajamas will just convince the independent voter that Republicans = Big Government. Untrue. But perception is reality. We should pick our battles more carefully.

It seems a little truth struck a nerve here. I had no idea so many liberaltarians infest Free Republic. I knew there were some, but am shocked to see so many reveal themselves! It is not “Maoist” or “nanny state” to want some restraint from the liberals of Hollyweird when they glorify crime and perversion. Indeed the Hays code was a self-imposed set of regulations in its day, NOT a law or regulation. Such restraint needs to be encouraged again today, and I dared to suggest, and still suggest that there is so little restraint shown by the Hollyweird liberals that perhaps duly constituted authorities must step in via FCC standards and the like to encourage such restraint. Giving our children a healthy outlook on life is what’s at stake. Another liberaltarian poster here said that we must change the culture before we change the media. I say the media IS the culture. I want my children to be able to see good entertainment that shows good and godly people living life well and being rewarded, so that this will be reinforced in their lives. I want more films such as the wonderful Christian sports movie “Facing the Giants,” showing the power of faith in our children’s lives, to be made. I want to see television programs about America’s war effort where the soldiers respectfully salute their officers and bravely fight our dastardly enemy, as they did in great war films made under the Hays Code like “Objective Burma” or “They Were Expendable.” In contrast to travesties like Clint Eastwood’s “Letters to Iwo Jima” which implied that there was some moral equivalence between us and the Japanese, and by extension, the fanatic godless enemies we fight today. Surely someone here understands the truth of what I am saying.

Check out “RESCUE ME”. IMHO, the best show on television. Season 4 starts in early June

If you go to hbo.com, you can see the episode summary for every show, every season to help you assess where you are in the series. It really helped me get caught up and understand the broader context of the characters.

With all due respect, it’s KOOKS like yourself that turn off so much of middle America. Religion has no place in stuff like this. Period, end of story

Last night’s 20 minute buildup of suspense - from Tony’s arrest to the fight - was IMO an excessive waste of film.

True, by the time of the first punch the tension had become as thick as molasses, but they really didn’t have the time to go through all of that. It wouldn’t have worked in a feature film, either.

On the other hand there were at least three new story arcs (e.g., the hollowpoint bullet charges and the Canadians), and we shall see whether those are completed before the conclusion of the series.

It would be funny if Christopher (A complete idiot in the series) scores with his movie “Cleaver” and becomes a successful hollywood filmmaker while the rest of the crew ends up in jail or dead. Christopher actually mugged Lauren Bacall in a very funny episode.

Giving our children a healthy outlook on life is what’s at stake.

You allow your children to watch the Sopranos? Does your TV only have one station and no on/off button?

The arc with the Canadians will be a good one. I see Tony’s brother in-law, while finally busting his cherry on that first hit, going down the river for it. Remember he said in reference to evidence “all that DNA stuff”. When he pulled away, he left huge portion of his shirt in the dead guys grasp. I think there lies the evidence that will convict him.
