Desk Jockeyed (great lesson from a school teacher)

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a Social Studies teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor took all of the desks out of the classroom.

The kids came into first period, they walked in to find there were no no desks. They looked around and said, "Ms. Cothren, where's our desk?"

She said, "You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn them."

They thought, "Well, maybe it's our grades."

"No," she said.

"Maybe it's our behavior."

She told them, "No, it's not even your behavior."

Well, I haven’t seen it before. (Not that I read everything or even 1/10th of everything here.)

So, thank you for posting it. Good story.

I just wish such things weren’t so unusual as to be worth reporting and repeating.

I had not seen it before. Thank you. I wonder if this Robinson, after whom the school was named, is the same fellow after whom Camp Robinson in North Little Rock is named. That is the home of the National Guard Professional Education Center and I went their for courses twice. Great place.

Reminds me of a new quote I saw:
Old quote: If you can read this, thank a teacher.

New quote: If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading this in English, thank a soldier.

Thought it was cute, not that the teaching establishment will understand it.

A great lesson to be taught.

But, it's a public (government) school -- I wonder when she'll be fired.

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading this in English, thank a soldier.

Great tagline.
