NEW YORK (AP) -- The radio station that produces Don Imus' talk show pledged to keep tabs on its content after he apologized for calling the players on Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy headed hos."
"We are disappointed by Imus' actions earlier this week which we find completely inappropriate," WFAN-AM said in a statement Friday. "We fully agree that a sincere apology was called for and will continue to monitor the program's content going forward."
Imus apologized Friday for the comments made earlier this week on his nationally syndicated program.
The National Association of Black Journalists demanded the immediate firing of the "Imus in the Morning" host. Imus questioned the players' looks, describing them as tattooed "rough girls." His producer compared the team - which has eight black members - to the NBA's Toronto Raptors.
Near the start of Friday's show, Imus said he wanted to "apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team."
"It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry."
Gregory Lee, an NABJ officer and senior assistant sports editor at The Boston Globe, said the mea culpa did little to atone for the comments.
"You can apologize, but what does that mean when you have a history of making disparaging remarks about people?" Lee asked about the acid-tongued Imus. "This kind of behavior must be punished. I hope the company and sponsors he has take some sort of action ... to educate him."
NABJ President Bryan Monroe asked Thursday if Imus had "lost his mind" and called for the veteran radio host's dismissal. Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer was also incensed by the comments about her team.

Hey, Al Sharpton has something to say.....
“I accept his apology, just as I want his bosses to accept his resignation,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton. He promised to picket Imus’ New York radio home, WFAN-AM, unless the veteran of nearly 40 years of anything-goes broadcasting is gone within a week.”

I’ll tune in to Imus every now and then...I can only watch a few minutes, though. He and David Gregory, the NBC News Chief White House Correspondent, is a regular on the show. They make me sick. All they do is criticize the Bush administration.
I had to laugh, though, last month when Gregory said that Bush is responsible for the deplorable conditions at Walter Reed. Imus stopped him and said no way you can blame that on Bush....that conditions at veterans and military hospitals were never good. That’s the only time I ever approved of one of Imus’s comments.
Has anybody ever seen Imus and Rosie O’Donnell together? maybe she/he has an early gig to help out with the View.
I used to occassionally tune in. If you consciously listen to Imus in the Morning I pretty much think that you gotta expect to be offended. A lot of his material is crass, lowest common denominator type stuff. I felt that he was equally offensive to everybody.
If ya hate the stuff just switch stations.
I have a friend who’s had some professional interaction with both Imus and his wife. He says that Dierdre has gone off the deep left end. Of course, Don has followed suit,...if you know the show you also know that Imus’s wife has a steely, vice like death-grip on certain parts of his anatomy.
Very interesting! Maybe I don’t watch him enough to appreciate him. (I do like his choice of music!) I just get annoyed with Bush bashing. I used to enjoy Letterman, but I can’t take him anymore for that reason. I wasn’t aware that Imus mocked liberals. That would be fun to hear.
I’m glad you brought up Zell Miller. I loved him, too. What ever happened to him? I seem to remember reading waayyyy back that he was to be a regular on FOX news....but then nothing.
Funny, but I used to catch Laura Lingraham on his show and I found her to be annoying and shrill. Now her program has taken Imus’s old slot on my local and I really enjoy her.
Like so few pols, Zell did what he actually said he was going to do; retire and go about living a quiet private life, bouncing grandchildren on his knee. Well, I’m sure that he’s a little more active than that, but for the most part I think Zell has kept his word.
Do you remember him getting after Chris Matthews,...by golly we sure need more politicians like old Zell!
The airwaves have been filled with bigoted speech for decades. Most of it has come from black “artists.” That is not to condone Imus, simply to put his behavior in a broader context of radio behavior.
If hasn’t been fired for being lame and stupid why would they fire him over this?
By the way, was the comment inappropirate because the girls aren’t nappy headed or because they aren’t hos?
Bitchards, Anus. How very clever. You have a great future ahead of you.
“”Im saying, there are way too many people (including FReepers) who look for things to be offended by.”
Especially Freepers.
I'll paraphrase here . . .
"Why are you blaming this administrations for the conditions at Walter Reed, Senator? YOUR SENATE COMMITTEE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSIGHT OF THOSE FACILITIES."
Ever hear black rap music......Imus’ language would be a Sunday school picnic compared to the way black “artists” describe women.
OOOOOOOOOh, the horrible Deidre! My one hope out of this stupid Imus situation is that he loses his show, therefore his influence, and Deidre gets kicked back to being nothing more than a nagging housewife who can’t get her telephone calls through to Congress.
“Imus also b!tch-slapped Lieberman over that very same issue a few weeks ago.”
Thanks. I will have to start watching him!
.. yup , I agree , Miss Marmelstein
I haven’t watched/listened to “The Cadaver In The Cowboy Getup” since his counterproductive WOT comments and his general effete feeling towards “us”
.. , this is TOO DELICIOUS ,.. effin’ Sharpton , picketing !!!
LOL.
