NEW YORK (AP) -- The radio station that produces Don Imus' talk show pledged to keep tabs on its content after he apologized for calling the players on Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy headed hos."
"We are disappointed by Imus' actions earlier this week which we find completely inappropriate," WFAN-AM said in a statement Friday. "We fully agree that a sincere apology was called for and will continue to monitor the program's content going forward."
Imus apologized Friday for the comments made earlier this week on his nationally syndicated program.
The National Association of Black Journalists demanded the immediate firing of the "Imus in the Morning" host. Imus questioned the players' looks, describing them as tattooed "rough girls." His producer compared the team - which has eight black members - to the NBA's Toronto Raptors.
Near the start of Friday's show, Imus said he wanted to "apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team."
"It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry."
Gregory Lee, an NABJ officer and senior assistant sports editor at The Boston Globe, said the mea culpa did little to atone for the comments.
"You can apologize, but what does that mean when you have a history of making disparaging remarks about people?" Lee asked about the acid-tongued Imus. "This kind of behavior must be punished. I hope the company and sponsors he has take some sort of action ... to educate him."
NABJ President Bryan Monroe asked Thursday if Imus had "lost his mind" and called for the veteran radio host's dismissal. Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer was also incensed by the comments about her team.

Actions? Meaning words?
That’s right. Bernard’s “Nagin”.
They did overplay that a few months ago, I think.
Yes, this means he supported Harold Ford Jr. . . . but he also openly and unequivocably supported Rick Santorum, too.
Now, if Rush would have said something like that about Pelosi, he would have been vilified.
Amazing how these assholes get away with stuff like that.
Their caricature of Nagin would be utterly offensive if it weren’t so accurate. LOL.
I think it's a ploy to keep getting idiots on to interview. You must admit some of his questions to them are direct. One of the few people that can get away with it.
It’s about ratings. He tries to show he doesn’t care about ratings, but with his ego . . .
I’ve concluded he draws from every demographic. Lately, he’s mentioned that they are beating CNN in the morning.
Well, he has said he'd the only registered Republican from the upper east side.
Our = Imus and his crabs.
It’s not like Rush Limbaugh had said it. Imus is a bastion for leftists on talk radio. His job is safe.
I don’t think his apology is going to be accepted for the same reasons Michael Bitchard’s apology wasn’t.
The things Don Anus said came from within. Those thoughts about Blacks were in mind long before he said any of these things. He let his guard down and got careless and let some of his bigotry and contempt for Blacks come out. An apology really doesn’t cut it in situations like this. What he said was not a mistake. He meant it. He didn’t stop with the first racial slur. He followed it with several more. That’s no mere slip of the tongue.
Would Don Anus have apologized if the media didn’t cover this story? His sorry old ass is only doing this because he got caught.
Like Michael Bitchards any apology Don Anus gives will seem like a lame attempt to save his reputation and/or job and he did it all to himself. He had this coming to him for a long time.
“Anus in the Morning!!!!!”
and not one peep out of the A.C.L.U.
and/or the N.A.A.C.P.
Very true.
What’s this brain-fried clown doing on a sports talk station, anyway?
Imus is revealed here, for those who didnt already know, as a bigot and a jerk. He deserves to lose his job over this.
I dont like the Rutgers womens basketball team myself, despite their basketball skill, because of their unsportsmanlike conduct (in the key tournament win againt Duke, the only reason they won is that a Duke player missed 2 free throws with 0.1 seconds left because the Rutgers players heckled and insulted her if she had made both, Duke would have won the game by 1 point).
But what Imus said about them is completely unacceptable and he deserves to be involuntarily retired.
Well, it ain’t gonna happen, so get over it.
