Station: Imus Remarks 'Inappropriate'(Double Standard Alert)
The Washington Times ^ | 4/7/2007 | LARRY McSHANE

NEW YORK (AP) -- The radio station that produces Don Imus' talk show pledged to keep tabs on its content after he apologized for calling the players on Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy headed hos."

"We are disappointed by Imus' actions earlier this week which we find completely inappropriate," WFAN-AM said in a statement Friday. "We fully agree that a sincere apology was called for and will continue to monitor the program's content going forward."

Imus apologized Friday for the comments made earlier this week on his nationally syndicated program.

The National Association of Black Journalists demanded the immediate firing of the "Imus in the Morning" host. Imus questioned the players' looks, describing them as tattooed "rough girls." His producer compared the team - which has eight black members - to the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

Near the start of Friday's show, Imus said he wanted to "apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team."

"It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry."

Gregory Lee, an NABJ officer and senior assistant sports editor at The Boston Globe, said the mea culpa did little to atone for the comments.

"You can apologize, but what does that mean when you have a history of making disparaging remarks about people?" Lee asked about the acid-tongued Imus. "This kind of behavior must be punished. I hope the company and sponsors he has take some sort of action ... to educate him."

NABJ President Bryan Monroe asked Thursday if Imus had "lost his mind" and called for the veteran radio host's dismissal. Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer was also incensed by the comments about her team.

I’m saying, there are way too many people (including FReepers) who look for things to be offended by.

Hey, don't sell him short. Anus in the Morning isn't an asset. He's a full-sized ass.

I take it Bernie's Cardinal antics don't offend them, but this does?

Snort.

It's what offends some folks that I find interesting.

Don Imus is a stupid jerk, but he's a ray of sunshine compared to the other hosts on that station--such as Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews. At least once he got the Clintons hopping mad over some disrespectful remarks about Clinton while he was President.

His apology is groveling enough that it ought to suffice, but probably won't because the elites will treat this as a "learning moment" to remind everyone else of the paramount issue of our time--white guilt.

The other guy maybe should be fired for comparing a good American team to a foreign team.

Actually the bigoted remarks were made by more than one person on the Imus show.

I think that it’s more a case of Imus wearing Harold Jr. as a badge of honor, just because Ford is black.

It reminds me of Joe Biden’s characterization of Obama as a “clean” , articulate black man. Liberals want to paint themselves as so lofty and holier-than-thou, yet their words often betray them.

I can just hear I mans words when the mike is off:

"Kiss my butt you station managers and go out and make some money from your advertisers."

Agree, sometimes his programs are boring. However, he does do some good stuff. Ever notice, when he interviews a lib (listen carefully) it is often done tongue and cheek.

All passive voice... Like, man, it just happened, ya know?

The non-apology apology.

How can you sleep when he has that whining wife of his on? It’s like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard, and he has her on almost every day.

I’ve thought that too at times. I’ve actually tried to see some good qualities in Ford, but from what I saw during the TN Senate campaign, he just didn’t have what it takes. Imus has good BS detectors. For Ford, he may just turn the gain down.

I absolutely despise that dolt liberal Deardra. Also, their spoiled rotten kid. And I'm sick of their green products.

Why do I watch this stuff?

As a TN resident I took offense at his continuous charges of "abject racism". He leveled NO such claims at the people of Maryland when they did not elect Michael Steele. He was also strangely silent about the voters in Pennsylvania when they failed to elect Lynn Swann.

Imus really DOES want someone elected by the color of their skin and not the content of their character. And that makes him the WORST kind of racist.

Ford’s aunt, uncle, and father have all been caught red-handed in dirty, political scandals. But, Harold Jr. is the slickest apple on the family tree.

With his savvy, aw-shucks media persona, he has diverted attention away from the most damning evidence against him.......his actual VOTING RECORD in Congress. It is main-line socialist.

Of all the Ford Jr. sycophants in the northeast media, Don Imus is the biggest, and most nauseating, cheerleader.
