Remarkable article IMO that shows some features of the Arab world that make modern democratic government very difficult to say the least. Way more detail than you usually get in mainstream media.

Clannish tribal loyalties + fervent Islam = a cluster

Unfortunately democracy is many generations distant unless of course we go WWII on them and cull the herd of their armed militants. Which would be approximately 10-20% of their population. The strategy worked with Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, as well as the Confederate South.

The Dagmoush family's home turf is a large Gaza City neighborhood cordoned off by huge concrete barriers, charred cars and burning dumpsters.

Charming. The Pali interpretation of the gated community.

"..Along the southern stretches of Gaza City.."

They must be strong because they are far to the south of the Palestinian sewage lakes, that in the spring, periodical overflow their banks and flood the beloved Arab homeland with sewage, drowning hundreds. Naturally, this Nile river like deposit of rich, nurturing matter is then allowed to dry into a fine dust which then blows around the lovely Palestinian state, producing the noticeable aroma that one associates with Palestine in the summer heat.

Thousands of years and some things look the same.

He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against everyone, and everyone's hand against him; In opposition to all his kin shall he encamp.
