NEW YORK (AP) - Radio host Don Imus apologized Friday for calling the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy headed hos'' on his nationally syndicated program.
The National Association of Black Journalists demanded his immediate firing after the man known as "Imus in the Morning'' put his foot deep in his mouth Wednesday.
Imus questioned the players' looks, describing them as tattooed "rough girls.'' His producer compared the team - which has eight black members - to the NBA's Toronto Raptors.
Near the start of Friday's show, Imus said he wanted to "apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning referring to the Rutgers women's basketball team.'' "It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry.''
Gregory Lee, an NABJ officer and senior assistant sports editor at The Boston Globe, said the mea culpa did little to atone for the comments. "You can apologize, but what does that mean when you have a history of making disparaging remarks about people?'' Lee asked about the acid-tongued Imus.
"This kind of behavior must be punished. I hope the company and sponsors he has take some sort of action ... to educate him.'' NABJ President Bryan Monroe asked Thursday if Imus had "lost his mind'' and called for the veteran radio host's dismissal.
Imus was speaking with producer Bernard McGurk when the NCAA title game between Rutgers and Tennessee came up. "That's some rough girls from Rutgers,'' Imus said. "Man, they got tattoos ...'' "Some hardcore hos,'' said McGurk. "That's some nappy headed hos there, I'm going to tell you that,'' Imus said.

(1) I don’t think anyone here is seriously proposing re-education camps. I am pretty sure that was tongue in cheek.
(2) Most commentary is on the double standard. There would be congressional hearings if Rush said something like this.
(3) I don’t understand it, but yes, Imus and many others in the liberal media have a tremendous impact on many people. Some will automatically subscribe to his beliefs on many issues. Certainly this one will not have a lot of followers, but it is less commentary than adolescent insults. He hit an impressive low point here. It will be interesting to see what hoops he will jump through to get back in the good graces of the liberal elite in DC.
More generally, why does anyone wear any tattoo at all? Just my personal opinion, but I think it shows a lack of class, especially on women.
BTW, it seems to me that as a general rule, college basketball - by its very physical nature - doesn't generally attract the best looking females on campus, regardless of race.
If he thinks the nappy hair and other features makes the girls look like whores, then he obviously has a problem.
Reading his words, it looks like Imus was trying to 'be down' with the HipHop crowd while blending slang from his youth.
If he'd been a Rapper, calling those ladies, "ho's" and such, he'd be cool. Since he used the word, "nappy" in his yak, he became an evil racist. You have to be careful from which vantage point and on which avenue with wich you denigrate another human.
Of course I believe Imus AND the Rappers are all wrong.
They wear them to show individuality, that they are different from everbody else ... that’s why everyone has to have them.

There is nothing wrong with being knappy headed.... but calling these female athletes AND college students HOs.... is just wrong. If he was insulting my daughter, I would be pissed.

My retired from the military after 20 years of honorable service. He has a tatoo and find him very...classy.
We all know that libs and demonrats are immune to charges of racism because, well, they're dems and libs, and they support the canon of required causes such as abortion, government programs for whatever, gun control, gay sex wherever it can be, etc. etc. Imus, however, takes it one step further.
This self-obsessed piece of sh*t innoculates himself and his fellow travelers yet more by cloaking himself in charity work. One of the Jewish sages (it might have been Maimonides) catalogued the degrees of goodness that charitable giving can have, whereas the highest order is total anonymity of the donor, and the lowest level of giving is to broadcast your giving. Well, if that's the case, Imus is off the charts on the low end.
While he does do good with his charities (SIDS Foundation, Imus Ranch for Kids with Cancer, and others) he NEVER EVER stops talking about it and how great he and his wife are. This extra step (he feels) further innoculates him from criticism from whatever he does or says.
Also, he is clever and sometimes very funny when he is not being vulgar, offensive or demeaning to people.

Tattoos were originally worn by sailors who were White and the ink was black to contrast the skin. Why shouldn’t Black people use white ink for the same reason??
