It's hard to offend both major branches of the Republican Party in one fell swoop, but Mayor Rudy Giuliani's confirmation today that he still supports publicly funded abortions has put him at odds with leading social and fiscal conservatives.
For example, Grover Norquist, a leading fiscal conservative and president of Americans for Tax Reform, told me this evening:
"Some Republicans are in favor of legalized abortions. No Republican is in favor of stealing money from the taxpayers to subsidize abortions."
And Dr. Carl Herbster, a leading Christian conservative had this to say: "... Not only are we not in favor of supporting abortions, we're not in favor of abortions, period. He also added: "I do appreciate his honesty. I just totally disagree with his position."
And Rev. Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition told me:
Mayor Giuliani is not going to be able to have any strong base of support from the religious right or the conservative base. Supporting federally funded abortions is an anathema to all of us who believe abortion is murder ... Tell Mayor Giuliani to look out: That Governor from Massachusetts is coming right up the middle!
Referencing Robert Mapplethorpe's controversial "art," Dr. Richard Land said:
"There's a huge difference between having the right to do something and having the government to subsidize it ... As a lawyer, (Rudy) should know better."
Ping ‘em if ya got ‘em, please!

Excellent!
Thompson/Hunter - Hunter/Thompson! Either way, I’m down with it.
“A liberal is a man too broadminded to take his own side in an argument.”
Well done, Rudy. I'd prefer not to hear his supporters complaining in the near future how the liberal MSM has caused his downfall. He's doing a pretty good job of that by himself.
I still don’t understand why any of this continues to be a surprise...given that Rudy is a plain and simple liberal who, like other RINOs, keeps an R after his name for perceived “conservative” appearances.
"READ,,,,,MY,,,,LIsP"!!!
"NO,,,,,MORE,,,,,CONSERVATIVES"!!!!
I can’t believe Guiliani was so stupid. Whatever his views, how hard is it for any good lawyer to say ‘this is a legislative issue for the people to decide, not a judicial issue for five USSC Justices to impose’?
I’m no social conservative and good luck finding me at church unless its to make my parents happy - but he really messed up with this one. Abortion is a horrible choice, and while I can accept it as a matter of free will and personal spiritual consequences, I cannot under any conceivable circumstance support federal subsidy for it.
He has crossed the line here from individual determination to socialist interference, but as far as I can tell, everyone involved on both sides feel D.C. is somehow in charge of dictating/forcing a policy on this issue. Even if we outlaw it, we will need money to hunt down and imprison violators.
Why can’t anyone just say “That’s not a federal issue!”
THAT GOVERNMENT ALWAYS KNOWS BEST!!!
We need Fred. Period.
Agreed! Rudy has always been damaged goods.
I do believe you are correct in making this call.
Hunter/Thompson Thompson/Hunter Thompson/Tancredo Tancredo/Thompson Hunter/Tancredo Tancredo/Hunter. I’ll buy any version of the above.
That having been said, it’s important for Senator Fred to know that despite his friendship with McCain and the goodwill he enjoys at this point in time, that anything that remotely smells like a Thompson / RudyMcRomney choice will put a hole n the side of his candidacy bigger than a U-boat could manage.

He has a veritable lock on the big-government “conservatives”. Just wait until after the primaries when he starts extolling the virtues of minimum wage laws, environmental regulations, and “progressive” taxation (wait - maybe he already has?). Of course, if he is nominated, and then loses, the big-government left-wing Republicans will just say that the evil right-wingers forced Rudy to campaign too far to the right, and that the key to “win” is to go further left, and be more like the demonrats.
FYI
Ping.
Liberal Republicans like JulieAnnie,,,,
are MORE DANGEROUS than liberal democrats,,,
because liberal Republicans BLUR THE DISTINCTION between conservatism and liberalism,,,,
MAKING LIBERALISM MUCH MORE ACCEPTABLE!
