Edwards uses wife's illness for campaign phishing

Bait and switch

NYPost reports:

"Democratic White House hopeful John Edwards' team has been collecting e-mail addresses from supporters who've sent his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, notes - and using them for fund-raising requests, aides acknowledged yesterday.

The link on Edwards' campaign Web site invites people to "send a note to Elizabeth and John" and features a sad letter from the former senator penned just after the couple found out her breast cancer had spread and is now incurable.

But people who've been sending such well wishes have been hit with e-mail solicitations from Team Edwards, asking for donations just as all candidates are looking to post big online fund-raising numbers.

In the letter, Edwards says the pair is staying optimistic and fighting hard for Elizabeth. Below the letter is a space for writing the couple a message - which can't be sent without all sections completed, including one asking for the sender's e-mail address.

That, in turn, is added to the campaign's online database for boosting Internet donations.

In response, message-senders get a "thank you" for their kind words, but no other indication that their e-mail addresses are being stored.

Wash Post blogger Mary Ann Akers has more. A commenter there aptly likens the Edwards scheme to phishing.

After getting hit with a barrage of criticism for the under-handed tactics, the Edwards campaign told reporters yesterday it would add an option to allow well-wishers to decline getting future e-mails.

Here it is:

I can see them if I look at the .jpeg by themselves. The fools better not forget their e-mail addresses so John can beg for money.

Dear [insert name here],

Thank you so much for your kind expression of concern for Elizabeth as she battles this disease. Got any cash?

Warm regards,
John Edwards

He lined his pockets channeling the memories of dead babies and using junk science. That he would profit on his wifes terminal illness to better himself is of no surprise to me.

According to Time magazine, Mrs. Edwards’ cancer is more treatable than they thought at first...
She might live 15 years yet. She’s around 55 now.

I see the Edwards page with the new box you have to check to receive future emails from the campaign-which was added later per the story.
Many folks said its up to them how they go forward after the most recent diagnosis, but, I thought he was wrong for even considering it.
Now, this, before they were called on it, tears it totally for me.
Edwards the ambulance chaser would demand to see the written diagnosis with x-rays, mris and so forth.
He is a worthless pos.

That would be right out of the Edwards standard play book of using health to create wealth.

Sen Edwards has been too busy on his own ‘future plans’ to let
his poor wife have maximum likelihood of cure by having a
timely diagnosis, timely therapy, and him devoted to
helping HER.

Instead, that poor women has probably had repeatedly delayed,
widely given, substandard rather-than-prompt care, as the
Senator has focused on his own egotistical plans.

One of the most important factors for curing people afflicted
by malignancy is time.

I’m glad her prognosis has improved...but I still find her husband to be on the sleazy side.

I think she has been receiving timely high quality care. The general public is being lead down a drama filled path lined with dollar signs.

Shame on me, but I find this funny. Edwards I’m sure stole a page out of Hillary’s plans in case her numbers get start going down. How will she top this one? Who has to die for her to get her sympathy vote? I

Your conjecture is disproved by reality and past statements by Ms. Edwards during the last election.
