Kindergartners Disciplined with Clothespins

A substitute teacher's tool for silencing chatty kindergartners doesn't wash with school officials in Ohio. The teacher has admitted disciplining four boys by placing clothespins on their upper or lower lips. The boys were reportedly talking too much in class.

The principal of Amanda-Clearcreek Primary School in Mason, Ohio, says he won't hire Ruth Ann Stoneburner to teach there again. She's also being reported to the state education department. Officials found out about the discipline after a parent complained. The students weren't hurt. The punishment isn't condoned by the district.

Tsk, tsk. If the boys won’t behave, you’re supposed to chuck potentially dangerous pharmaceuticals down their throats to alter their brain chemistry, not use clothespins.

"The students weren't hurt."

Not by the teacher and the clothespins, but the counter-disciplinary lesson could have lasting results.

War Against Boys ping!

Notice the boys were the only ones talking too much?? Teachers often don’t like typical boy behavior.

Well, clothespinning their lips is better than beating them with a baseball bat, I suppose.

Another example of a school frightened of being sued by parents.

Yes. At least the substitute teacher didn't correct their grammar. She ought to get some credit for that!

From the title I figured they were hung on a clothesline.

An obvious kindergarten washout.

When I was in elementary, middle and high school, circa 1967-1981, almost every teacher had a "fanny paddle" prominently displayed on their desk. Some used them physically, some used them psychologically. There wasn't a problem with 5th graders having sex in the classroom, nor were there any of the other discipline problems we are seeing in classrooms today. I can say now in hindsight that every time I was paddled I deserved it and I suffer no lasting harm from any paddling I ever received.

I have a (male) cousin who was put in a dark closet one day in 4th grade as a disciplinary measure, who then wasn’t able to sleep in a dark room for some time afterwards. That was in the late 60s.

When I was in grade school, I had a teacher in 4th grade who kept me off honor roll one six weeks because I talked too much. I had to stand there with her at the door after school while everyone filed out past us. Very humiliating, tears running down my chubby face. Miss Hall. Hate her guts. j/k!

This teacher must have been a NUN in a past life!

I suppose the "threat" of the fanny paddle was worse than the punishment.

In my Junior High school days, we had a male teacher whose favorite weapon was his extremely strong right hand. When he caught you goofing off, he quietly approached you, grabbed your bicep and, with a grip of iron, "lectured" you while squeezing your muscle with all his might.

After the first few days of school, there were no longer "class clowns" in his class.
