Immigrants save US cities from shrinking

Parts of the metropolitan US are relying on hundreds of thousands of foreign immigrants to maintain population levels as native-born Americans move elsewhere, according to figures released today.
New York would lose around 100,000 residents a year if overseas immigrants were not filling the void, the census bureau figures for 2000 to 2006 show. Los Angeles and Boston would also shrink without immigrants, threatening their economies and property markets.
"A lot of cities rely on immigration to prop up their housing market and economies," said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington thinktank.
The census found that more than 1 million immigrants moved to New York between 2000 and 2006, while 600,000 people, mostly US-born, relocated. The Washington area experienced its slowest growth since at least 1990 last year, with newborns and immigrants barely offsetting the record number of residents who moved out, the Washington Post reported. New York was the most populous metropolitan area on July 1 2006, with 18.8 million people, followed by Los Angeles (13 million) and Chicago (9.5 million). Fourteen metro areas had populations of 4 million or more.
The figures also show that the population of New Orleans has dropped by nearly 290,000 people since 2005,

Yeah, that’s what we need - more immigrants so our cities won’t shrink.

Speaking of shrinks, the Guardian needs an army of them if they think that’s the biggest concern we have.
What morons!!
I wonder if they somehow connected the two issues? Noooooo......
Hmm, I wonder why those native-born Americans are moving elsewhere?
(My assumption here is that the hundreds of thousands of "foreign immigrants" are mostly illegals doing what illegals seem to be best at doing).
Immigrants, legal and illegal, are “saving” the US population from shrinking. About 3/4 our population growth can be attributed to immigration, legal and illegal. Since 1970 we have added 100 million people, 53 million since 1990 and 20 million since 2000, which is the equivalent of our seven largest cities. Is this a good thing?
LOL!
Thank goodness for the illegals!
When all the citizens fled the cities, brave immigrants moved in to fill the gap! Despite the growing crime and immigrant gang problems, these people stepped up to the bat to live where citizens chose not to!

How much does one get paid to take part in a "Think Tank"? I think they need a pay cut.
let em sink,,er..shrink...nah, let em sink
The 1950’s and 60’s were a pretty good time for this nation with a whole bunch fewer people.
If “alternative lifestyles” wasn’t being accepted, and more importantly abortion as a form of birth control, we could deport all the illegals without fear of our cities shrinking.
Surely this is another April Fool’s joke?
We coule release all the people in jail, too. That might help.
Immigrants ruin our cities by stealing needed jobs.
I wonder how many people leave the cities because they are being turned into cesspools by the illegal aliens?
I have relatives who moved out of the city only because of the new immigrants who started to harass them.
It’s always been that way. Immigrants go to the cities. Second generation moves out.
Dumbest excuse of allowing illegal immigration, that I have yet seen.
