Giuliani to bring campaign to S.C. (Abortion Views Will be Questioned)
News 4 Carolina ^ | April 5, 2007

Posted on 04/05/2007 6:08:04 AM PDT by Livin_large

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is scheduled to campaign Thursday in South Carolina and questions about abortion may follow him to all three stops.

The presidential campaign visits come not long after a CNN interview where Giuliani said he personally opposes abortion, but supports public funding of abortion of poor women as long as it is law, defending a speech he made in 1989.

While Republicans in South Carolina may oppose abortion by degrees -- for instance allowing abortions in certain circumstances, such as a mother's health, rape or incest -- there's little room on public financing, said Oran Smith, the Palmetto Family Council's executive director.

"That's usually one of the first thing off the list when you talk about things related to abortion," Smith said.

Giuliani has a news conference planned Thursday morning at the Statehouse with other stops in Charleston and North Myrtle Beach.

The abortion issue doesn't bother all of Giuliani's supporters. "I'm really for the whole package. I feel like I'm comfortable being for him," said Rosemary Byerly of Inman.

But others think Giuliani's comments on abortion may be tough to overcome in South Carolina, which plans to hold the first Republican presidential primary next winter, said Alexia Newman, a state Republican Party first vice chairwoman who runs the Carolina Pregnancy Center.

"I don't understand how he can be for public funding of abortion. He has told people he's pro-life," said Newman, who listened to Giuliani tell the state Republican executive committee a few months ago that he would appoint judges who want a strict interpretation of the Constitution -- something they interpreted at the time as leaning toward undoing the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

Giuliani position won't sit well in such a conservative state, said Clemson University political scientist Dave Woodard.

"He's toast," Woodard said. "I think it's going to be really hard for him to overcome this in South Carolina."

I don't Rudy's stance on abortion will play well here.

The public funding issue is worse than being pro-choice - in my view.

The issue will be how he answers the questions.

My guess is he will answer these issues in a strong manner - and he won’t squirm.

We’ll see.

"I don't understand how he can be for public funding of abortion. He has told people he's pro-life,"

That's because he is a liar who would say anything to get elected. He is playing conservatives for fools.

Rudy's statement supporting federal funding for abortions is going to cost him the election. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

On Abortion ...I’ve said that I’ll uphold a woman’s right to choice, that I will fund abortions so that a poor woman is not deprived of a right others can exercise… Rudy Giuliani 1989.

On Gun Control ...This is an industry that is profiting from the suffering of innocent people. What’s worse, its profits rest on a number of illegal and immoral practices. This lawsuit is meant to end the free pass that the gun industry has so long enjoyed... Rudy Giuliani 2000 after filing suit against gun makers and distributors.

On Gun Control ....We need a federal law that bans all assault weapons, and if in fact you do need a handgun you should be subjected to at least the same restrictions-and really stronger ones-that exist for driving an automobile... Rudy Giuliani 1997

Watch him start backtracking on that statement now. I guess his handlers have to have constant meetings anymore in “damage control” - having to spin Rudy’s latest “step-in-poop” moments.

It’s hard to keep a constant story going when you’re telling lies - the truth is bound to slip out every once in awhile.

Rudy is a fraud who would say anything to get elected.

He will need to explain his recent statements on judgicial appointments with regard to abortion too:

“I would appoint judges who are strict constructionists, because that’s my view of the constitution and how it has to be interpreted.”

“My view of the constitution is that you have to leave that ultimate choice to a person.”

“I would appoint judges who are strict constructionists who would try to construe the constitution based on what it means, not what they would like it to mean.”

“Sure. That’s be exactly the kind of person you’d think that you’d want to appoint, somebody who shares kind of your general outlook”

“Presidents, going back to the beginning of the republic, generally appoint people on the Supreme Court that they believe agree with them. “

While Rudy might do well in IA and NH and any other pseudo-lib state, he’s DOA in the South.

Good point, Jake. In mine too.

If Rudy can stop the psychotic Left from seizing more power and wreaking more destruction--if anyone can--that's enough for me. That's how bad things have gotten.

Archives of Rudolph W. Giuliani, 107th Mayor

Opening Remarks to the N.A.R.A.L. "Champions of Choice" Lunch

The Yale Club, Thursday, April 5th, 2001

As Delivered

Thank you very much for inviting me to say a few words of welcome. This event shows that people of different political parties and different political thinking can unite in support of choice. In doing so, we are upholding a distinguished tradition that began in our city starting with the work of Margaret Sanger and the movement for reproductive freedom that began in the early decades of the 20th century.

As a Republican who supports a woman's right to choose, it is particularly an honor to be here. And I would like to explain, just for one moment, why I believe being in favor of choice is consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party. In fact, it might be more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party. Because the Republican Party stands for the idea that you have to restore more freedom of choice, more opportunity, more opportunity for people to make their own choices rather than the government dictating those choices. Republicans stand for lower taxation because we believe that people can make better choices with their money than the government will make for them, and that ultimately frees the economy and produces more political freedom. We believe that, yes, government is important, but that the private sector is actually more important in solving our problems.

So it is consistent with that philosophy to believe that in the most personal and difficult choices that a woman has to make with regard to a pregnancy, those choices should be made based on that person's conscience and that person's way of thinking and feeling. The government shouldn't dictate that choice by making it a crime or making it illegal.

I think that's actually a much more consistent position. Many Republicans support that position, but you don't hear that as often. For example, in a recent poll by American Viewpoint, 65 percent of Republicans supported changing the plank in the Republican platform that calls for a constitutional ban on abortion. That's 6.5 out of every 10 Republicans. And over 80 percent of Republicans believe that the decision with regard to an abortion should be made by a woman, her doctor, and her family rather than dictated by the government.

[Applause]

In any case, I just wanted you to know that many of my fellow Republicans stand with you on this issue. So I thank you, I thank NARAL for taking the lead in establishing freedom of choice for all of us, and as the Mayor of New York City, I thank you for being here in New York City.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) — Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.

“Ultimately, it’s a constitutional right, and therefore if it’s a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected,” Giuliani said in an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash in Florida’s capital city.

"Most of Clinton's policies are very similar to most of mine." - Rudy Giuliani

Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do and how you do it.

We don't have to accept liberal Rudy. There are other options. This fellow may be the best one:

Alexia.

Dear.

Just because a guy with a pro-abortion track record as long as your arm waltzes into your state and says he's pro-life and supports good judges doesn't make it true.

And that goes for Rudy AND Romney.

This gives lie to two of the phony claims put out there by the Gungrabiani supporters--1.) That he's not that pro-abortion and 2.) That he's for smaller government.

This guy is a not-very-crypto liberal. Hillary can run to his right without breaking a sweat--and that's scary.
