Fla. student who mooned teacher sues

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A high school senior acknowledges he went too far when he mooned a teacher. But he thinks the decision of school officials to send him to a new school for the rest of the year was too harsh, so his family is suing.

Tyler Tillung, 18, mooned a teacher "suddenly and without thinking about the consequences" in February, according to the lawsuit filed Tuesday. The teacher had declined to let him into a Feb. 21 school lip sync show that was full. He was suspended for six days and reassigned to a new school.

But the teen wants to graduate with his Palm Harbor University High class in six weeks and complete his final season on the varsity baseball team, the lawsuit said.

"We're talking about his graduation," said Tillung's lawyer, B. Edwin Johnson. "That's an important event in a guy's life. ... This kid deserves a break."

School Board Attorney Jim Robinson said administrators stand by their decision.

"Without knowing the allegations, we're confident in the administration's position on this case," Robinson said. Palm Harbor principal Herman "Doc" Allen described the mooning as "disgusting" and the teacher as "traumatized."

So dollars that could be used for education will have to be diverted to defend this suit.

Traumatized??? Come on, let's not be too dramatic. The kid may have deserved what he got, but I doubt this teacher is going to need psychotherapy the rest of his/her life because he/she got mooned. If so, there are many other things wrong with him/her.

How does sending him to another school address the problem?

Wouldn’t it be cool if the judge mooned him and yelled “case dismissed?”

I guess my question is: does this kid have a history of issues, or is this the first stupid act he’s pulled thru his 4 years there? IF it’s his first, they should at least reconsider, but if he’s always in trouble, too bad.

Pour l'encouragement des autres. Keep him in the same school and he finishes off the year as a rock star. He shows his peers that there are no consequences, that there is no line that is too far, that mommy and daddy can trump everything by bringing in a lawyer. It is a life-lesson that will be cheap at half the price if the kid straightens out now instead of really screwing the pooch later on. Like on the lacrosse team or something.

What do you think the problem is, and how would you address it?

I think I like this response to his behavior because it only does emotional harm to the perp and makes it clear that the school takes it seriously when a student shows obscene disrespect to a teacher. The fact that the kid is sufficiently upset to sue suggests that the punishment is right on the money. I only hope when he loses that the judge makes him pay costs of defending the suit.

That the parents would side with the student against the teacher in this is outrageous.

“suddenly and without thinking about the consequences”
that is a real problem nowadays, no consequences, I am still curious as to the outcome of the Barbie Bandits and their robbing of a bank.

It’s the same as the Catholic Church moving it’s problem priests to another parish. He’s already had 6 days of suspension, if the school didn’t think that was enough punishment then add on more days until he can’t graduate with his class. Make him go to summer school to graduate. As it is, the school now has to shell out the other students’ tax dollars on the law suit.

They say never play cards with a guy called “Doc” or eat at a place called “Mom’s”. Don’t know if it’s true, but that’s what they say.

Yeah, on the one hand, the kid "didn't think about the consequences" and now, with plenty of time to reflect on his actions, he feels that there shouldn't be any consequences.

Super.

They are not even being charged with bank robbery. The charges are felony theft. Smoking Gun has a little info.

Two strippers hooked up with a couple of gangsta thugs who had an inside at the bank. Last you’ll hear of it, I’d bet. Of course the mom was quoted as saying how good the girls were. Yeah.

Would an 18-year-old female student mooning a male teacher have the same consequences? .... THAT, is the real question......

The kid needs to start taking responsibility for his actions now (it would seem that this is a new concept to him), or he will suffer for it later in life. There might not always be a shyster (or his parents) around who can save his bacon. Prisons are full of guys who didn’t learn that lesson. Actions have consequences.
