Mitt Romney Calls Himself a Longtime Hunter - Even Though He's Gone Out Only 2 Times (Rut Roh!)
ABC News ^ | 4/5/07

BOSTON Apr 5, 2007 (AP)— In boasting about his lifelong experience as a hunter, Mitt Romney may have shot himself in the foot.

The Republican presidential contender has told audiences on several occasions, most recently this week in gun-savvy and early voting New Hampshire, that he has been a longtime hunter. But it turns out he has been on only two hunting trips.

Critics said it was the latest example of a White House aspirant willing to say anything to reach the Oval Office.

"Whether he's pretending to be a hunter, misleading people about loaning his campaign millions of dollars or signing a no-new-tax pledge he once mocked to hide his tax-raising record, he'll say absolutely anything to distance himself from his real record," said Damien LaVera, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee.

The charge echoed with similarities to the criticism the Republican National Committee used to level against another Massachusetts politician running for president, Sen. John Kerry, who was his party's 2004 nominee.

In a question-and-answer session Tuesday in Keene, N.H., Romney spoke of his experience with hunting in a manner that suggested a close affiliation with the sport.

"I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I've been a hunter pretty much all my life," he told a man sporting a National Rifle Association cap.

Yet the former Massachusetts governor's hunting experience came during two trips at the bookends of his 60 years: as a 15-year-old, when he hunted rabbits with his cousins on a ranch in Idaho, and last year, when he shot quail on a fenced game preserve in Georgia.

The 2006 trip was an outing with major donors to the Republican Governors Association, which Romney headed at the time.

He’s not looking to get endorsed by the NRA. Rudy is honest about himself!

Bullship!!!

FEB. 2007 to Hannity

GIULIANI: I understand the Second Amendment. I support it. People have the right to bear arms. When I was mayor of New York, I took over at a very, very difficult time. We were averaging about 2,000 murders a year, 10,000...

On Gun Control ...This is an industry that is profiting from the suffering of innocent people. What’s worse, its profits rest on a number of illegal and immoral practices. This lawsuit is meant to end the free pass that the gun industry has so long enjoyed... Rudy Giuliani 2000 after filing suit against gun makers and distributors.

On Gun Control ....We need a federal law that bans all assault weapons, and if in fact you do need a handgun you should be subjected to at least the same restrictions-and really stronger ones-that exist for driving an automobile... Rudy Giuliani 1997

None of these candidates are responsible for abortions. And to say so is totally wrong. You want to blame someone for abortions blame the people who get them. You can’t force people NOT to get abortions that is going to only cause anarchy and retaliation. Education is the key! Educate the Youth before they become adults (high school and college). The adults are already set in their ways. The new generation can be the ones that make the right choice. Education is the key. The ONLY key.

YOU JUST PROVED MY POINT! He doesn’t want to get endorsed by the NRA! LOL! Do you really think that will endear him to the NRA?

“Have there been any stories about them and hunting? “

Yes, a few years back Hillary answered a question from a guy in an NRA hat and she said that she was a duck hunter. When pressed later she said it was a long time ago but it was ducks and she was a hunter.

As for Mitt and Hillary, Kerry actually had better hunting creds and he actually owned guns.

“As bad as I hate to admit it, this guy is our version of John Kerry”.

As a politician running for office, I agree. H epanders and seems to lie shamelessly. However, give Romney credit for running a business and a state with good success. The only thing Kerry ever ran was his wind surfer.

This actually is old news; it’s come up before.

I expect that it will come up again and again.

Now if the reporters would ask him about “assault weapons”! Mitt’s against them, has said so recently (February on Steffi’s show) yet I suspect has no clue what they are except that “they are designed for hunting down people and shooting them”.

Mitt supports the second amendment fully except for the RKBA part and assault weapons, whatever they are.

“and a state with good success.”

Massachusetts used to have a policy of returning State tax dollars to the towns as “State Aid”, which among other things covered stuff that the state mandated, like health care for town employees and lots of education stuff.

Mitt saved the state by keeping taxes the same and cutting state aid, so many towns were required to charge parents money for schoolbus service, band, sports, and other things, while raising local property taxes and fees.

Mitt bragged about “balancing the budget while not raising taxes”.

Two real hunters, five pretenders, six conservatives and one liberal. Three ex Mormons, three Catholics and one Jew hunting pheasants in Northern Utah.

I guarantee the pretenders all think they are valid hunters after only one outing. They all have this picture prominently displayed. All but one are freepers.

No, Romney didn't show up that day. He must have been on the other side of the mountain.

Why do politicians believe they must lie over this subject to gain appeal to those who correctly defend our right to keep and bear arms?

If they aren’t a hunter, so what? As long as they understand and agree with our right to keep and bear arms, that’s all I care about, whether they’ve been a lifelong hunter or not isn’t the point with me when it comes to firearms.

I’m sick of these politicians who never met a gun control law they didn’t like - until they need gun owner votes. Then all of a sudden they’re signing up for the NRA and claiming to be my best buddy. Liars all of them.

Why couldn’t he just be honest and say he only hunted twice and that he thinks it might be something he would enjoy which is why he joined the NRA!

Fitty, don't prompt him with more BS statements -- it's pretty obvious he joined the NRA to suck up to them so they wouldn't lay the hammer down on him for supporting, promoting, and signing an Assault Weapons Ban (he also supported the federal one).

Besides, you don't join the NRA as a life member because you might enjoy hunting. If you might enjoy hunting, you go hunting.

"None of these candidates are responsible for abortions."

You are absolutely correct in your premise. No neither I nor anyone else can "blame" any of these candidates for 40+ million DEAD babies in more than 30 years but blame them I do, if they have not ever spoken out against this heinous evil infecting everyone's life.

Blame them I do, for never using their positions of power to speak truth to the lie of "choice." They are moral cowards to the worship of abortion in America.

Blame them I do, for never once standing on the steps of the Supreme Court and publically praying for America to weep for the innocent blood on all of our hands.

Blame them I do, for using weasel words, like "choice," "between a woman and her doctor," "medical health (for whom, I might add, certainly NOT for the health of her dead baby) exceptions" to the ripping and tearing apart of an almost-born baby.

Yes blame them I do, no vote ever for pro-death Republicans, even in the face of Hillary.

As a post-abortion counselor, I have heard so many stories from so many grieving second victims of our delusional double-speak.

These women have more nightmares, suffer more depression, attempted suicides, more dysfunction lives than the post traumatic stress suffered from veterans on the battlefield, for the tragedy is they permitted and in some cases, paid for the butchering of their children.

The spreaders of this evil are the liars and the butchers who earn billions lying to our youngest women by killing their babies -- then use that blood money to buy moral cowards who will stand up for this evil.

They are also you and me unless we insist that the truth in movies like "Silent Scream", photos of abortion mills, photos of the bloody torn apart limbs, and even the huge multiple garbage disposals that are used as "cemeteries" for the victims are shown to each and every American!

(The 2nd Amendment is about hunting anyway) ---> Was this sarcasm or a display of ignorance?

Typo, pretty sure. "Isn't" about hunting.

So Rudy says he would appoint strict constructionists - while also saying he sees abortion as a Constitutional right and favors public funding of abortion.

And Mitt says he's a longtime hunter, but has only been hunting twice.

The GOP front-runner pander-thon is well underway. Is there any reason to trust a damn thing any of these guys are saying?

He doesn’t want to get endorsed by the NRA!

So Rudy is losing the socon pro-life vote by supporting public funding for abortions and calling abortion a Constitutional right.

And he's losing the NRA vote because of his gun-grabbing history, appearances at Brady Center rallies and calls for more federal gun control laws.

I'm really curious how much of the GOP base Rudy and his supporters think he can foresake and still win the general election, running leftwards as a pro-war pubbie.

But, I started as a kid, and only get to go about once every 5 years. /chuckles
