Presidential candidate Tommy Thompson said Wednesday that he wants the Iraqi government to vote on whether the U.S. should keep its troops there.
"I'm confident they will, but . . . if they do vote no - they don't want us there - we should get out," Thompson said, drawing applause.
Thompson, who was health and human services secretary during President Bush's first term, made the comment during his first formal presidential campaign stop in his home state. He formally announced Sunday on "This Week" on ABC that he is seeking the Republican nomination for president.
Thompson described himself as the only candidate with a commonsense approach to Iraq.

I don’t know, seems kind of wishy-washy and liberal-lite to me.
Iraq has a duly elected government, we shouldn’t be pandering to mob rule just because that’s the way we do it now here in the States.
They already did, sir.
Presumably, you'd would serve as Rudy's Veep or would that be Secretary of State (we certainly have enough anti-military, anti-U.S. RINOs in line just in front of you.)
No, i don’t think it’s that, it’s pointing out that if the decision were really up to the iraqis, which it kind of is, they WANT us there, and no amount of spin from the left or the MSM can swing that opinion. Nobody is actually talking asking what do the Iraqis want? What DO they want? I don’t think anyone can make the case that they want us to leave. That’s why it’s an interesting suggestion.
Hello Tommy! Please try to pay attention. It does not matter what the Iraqis want. The Democrats don’t care. They aren’t saying they want us out because the Iraqi’s don’t want us there. They want us out because they are insane.
who is “they”? the iraqis voted us out? I must have missed that.
>> Tommy Thompson: Let Iraq Vote on U.S. Troops
Ah ha... and Mexico should vote on our immigration policies ?!?!?!?!?
I don’t know about that, but his other Iraq ideas make some sense. I like the Oil Profit sharing idea that would give Iraqis a reason to keep the oil pipelines safe.
Great idea - but only after they've voted on whether they want freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and the right to bear arms. Let's get them in the mood for freedom before we ask if they're ready for us to leave.

Furthermore, unless and until we can assure ourselves that Iraqi's government won't wind up giving allegiance either to terrorists in Iran or Syria, we will never be safe.
Iraqi's voted their government in, which asked U.S. to stay. Like in America, they elected people to vote on their behalf and that government has asked that we remain, not leave.
We have left far too much blood on behalf of the freedom (and security for U.S.) to wander off and allow terrorists to resume same strongholds in same countries as before.
They won't leave us alone as they did when we pulled out our troops in Korea, and Viet Nam, they will come after us because they want us dead and believe that it is Allah's will to destroy us, not merely our military presence in Iraq.
Not the same situation. It would be more like asking Mexico to vote on whether the US can take out a drug cartel within their borders. If it’s clear they don’t wish our assistance, and we can’t make a “clear and present danger” case or a Declaration of War, then no, we shouldn’t go into Mexico to get them. It is national sovereignty issue. Now, if the Mexican Govt, is supporting this cartel, then THEY become our enemy and all international respect is off.
Now, I’m not being inconsistent here, because Iraq was in violation of numerous UN charters, and deemed to be a “clear and present danger” to US interests, which will justify military action.
Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. It’s not about Iraq. Never was.
It’s about Iran, sir. We stay in Iraq to be close to Iran.
In a way, it doesn't matter if the Democrats win in 2008. We pull out from Iraq then the terrorists attack us. The American Public realize that the Democrats in charge are worthless cowards and the Republicans win in a landslide in 2012 or 2016. Then we go back to Iraq the third time, this time we'll finish them off.
What a dumb thing to say. Bold politically, but misguided.
If we are there as a matter of self-defense, then we should stay until we feel it’s safe to leave.
(was referring to Tommy’s comments, not yours, btw.)
North Korea will give nuclear advantage to Iran, Iran will strike Israel and at same time cells in us will use their nuke suitcases in at least 8 cities (already identified by intelligence)and America will be submissive to Iran, Islamofaciasts, et al.
Good post, damn straight.
Regards.

I don't think he said it correctly, but it got me thinking about how to turn around the Dem's arguments against themselves.
There is a reason no-one is talking this point in the MSM, I'm pretty sure Iraq would vote us to stay, hands down. It's a debate the left doesn't want to happen, but it would engage our population in the spectacle of it, or at least, we could point back at the results every time the left opens their mouths.
I’m pretty sure there was a Zogby poll or something around December that the Iraqis overwhelmingly wanted us to stay but it doesn’t get any play in our agitprop press.
Regardless, if the Iraqis want us to leave, they should petetion their duly elected government. Here in the States too many things get done at the expense of republicanism as the media manufactuers opinion and stirs people to act rashly.
