A funny thing happened on the way to Hillary Clinton's announcement that she's raised a record-setting $26 million dollars this quarter.

It's one of those funny things that most Americans probably won't notice. But once in awhile, those pesky reporters serve a purpose. Sen. Clinton's refusal to come clean about what part of that $26 million is for the primary and what part is for the general election can give us a strong glimpse into the secretive, ambitious, scheming ways of the woman who wants to return to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Allow me to explain.

The Clinton campaign announced that 50,000 donors contributed the $26 mil. Trouble is, since they won't reveal how much is for the primary and how much is for the general election (something the John Edwards campaign did disclose), there's no way of knowing how much of that money she can actually get her hands on. Because under campaign fundraising laws, she cannot touch any money donated for the general election unless she wins the primary. If she loses the primary, all the general election contributions must be returned.

For all we know, Team Clinton has collected $1 million dollars for the primary and $25 million for the general, making her "record-setting" fundraising quarter a laugher.

Few, if any, political observers believe that the Clintonistas don't actually know what the breakdown is.

So what we're probably left with is one, big, fat headline that is utterly meaningless: "Hillary Raises Record $26 Million." Which is precisely what she wants.

Politically speaking, Hillary Clinton is all about style over substance. Forget the truth, she and her husband worship at the altar of focus groups, polling, surveys and looking good in front of the masses.

It seems pretty obvious that the only reason that the Clinton campaign is refusing to reveal the financial breakdown is because the truth about how much she can actually spend is a lot less splashy a story than the oft-repeated $26 million dollars.

This deception is significant because it should help voters understand how she operates. She's counting on most Americans not paying attention to the news media's questions about the difference between the primary and general election fundraising.

Hillary Clinton will do &endash; or say &endash; anything to get elected. As a U.S. Senator, she won over many rural upstate New Yorkers with loved ones serving in the military by pretending to be in favor of the war in Iraq. Once her presidential aspirations became public, she suddenly turned away from the war and joined the chorus of fellow liberal Democrats by demanding a withdrawal from Iraq.

Dick Morris once told me that the Clintons are almost like political robots. They breathe, eat, sleep, and live their lives with a singular purpose: get elected to the next office they're running for. As a team, they've done it for decades.

While it's disturbing that Hillary Clinton won't come clean about the financial breakdown of the $26 million dollars she's raised, it's not surprising. She would never let truth get in the way of a good headline.

This is who she is.

Such conditions, irrespective of vote tally, can never a 'landslide' make.
(ASIDE: That missus clinton has never been tested should concern all Democrats.) ¹

Nonetheless, missus clinton dumped 30-million-dollars' worth of false advertising ² into the race: Standard-issue clinton sleight-of-hand intended to transmute:

• hillary-dross ³ into gold (or at least into more 'plans' ¹¹),
  
  

• real-time hillary-hiding into virtual hillary-ubiquity, ⁴
  
  

• hillary-abhorrence ⁵ into a measurable-if-hold-your-nose-variety hillary-nod.

 

The purpose of the 30-million-dollar demagogic infusion was to create the illusion of a landslide in New York in '06, which would, (so the wishful thinking goes), create the illusion of national electability in '08, an absolute prerequisite to nomination for someone with a Q Score as wanting as missus clinton's. ⁶

 

FUZZY MATH AT THE NEW YORK TIMES

The official New York State Board of Elections tally will not be available until mid-December, a sufficient time lag for Pinch and Company ⁷ to exaggerate the significance of the hillary vote and for the mischaracterization to become firmly fixed in our collective 'history.' Truth and America matter not at all to The New York Times. Agenda is everything. ⁸ The Times' clinton endorsements redux. ⁹

Senator Clinton led her opponent, John Spencer, by 67 to 31 percent....
She also won two-thirds of the male voters and three-quarters of female voters.

If missus clinton won two-thirds of the total vote and two-thirds of the male vote, she could not have won three-quarters of female vote unless the total female vote was at or about zero. Similarly, if she won two-thirds of the total vote and three-quarters of female vote, she could not have won two-thirds of the male vote.

SPITZER'S ZIPPER

For her entire adult (such as it is) life, zipper-hoisting has been missus clinton's principal means of upward mobility. ¹⁰ This election was no different.

Zipper-hoisting has, in the past, proven to be a sticky wicket for missus clinton, owing not to antithetical feminist ideology, as one would expect -- feminists willingly sacrificed feminism on the altar of clintonism -- but to zipper choice, her rather injudicious attachment early on to a certain zipper habitually on the downslide.

This time she picked zippers a bit better, glomming onto Eliot's.

Contrary to 'conventional wisdom,' the coattails (if you'll pardon the mixed metaphor) were Eliot's, not hers. The three percent who voted for Spitzer who could not overcome their revulsion to pull the lever for hillary tell it all.

This aside, getting either a woman or a black elected is tough, but getting both elected on the same ticket is virtually impossible.

The only way it could happen: hillary wins the nomination and polls show that she loses in a landslide unless obama is on the ticket, in which case she wins.

But I don’t see this happening. If polls show she will lose in a landslide, she won’t get the nomination. The Ds will finally have their excuse to dump the dud, and they will do it .

And, therefore, did the Ds actually raise more than the Rs?

Consider the following:

1- missus clinton's been out on the hustings forever. Rudy has only just begun. On a dollars-per-day basis, Rudy hammers hillary.

I've been using 'missus' forever.
It tells us that hillary clinton is no feminist, that she is a fraud.
It reminds us of the zipper-hoisting....

Even Nina Burleigh (Do the Right Thing, Hillary) dismisses hillary clinton as a dull, midlevel technocrat (and I use that word loosely), whose zipper-hoisting ("charm") can take her no higher.

A twist (and, if you'll pardon the double entendre, a pun) on the Peter Principle.
