Koreans and Japanese Ranked World's Slimmest People

Koreans, many of whom are experiencing a sweeping zeal for losing weight, count with the Japanese as among the slimmest people in the developed world, a study shows. According to PopNews, a study on body mass index (BMI) released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in 2005 shows that only 3.2 percent of Koreans and Japanese have a BMI higher than 30.

A person with a BMI figure higher than 25 is considered overweight, while a reading above 30 means obesity.

The U.S. is the fattest of the OECD member nations with 30.6 percent of its population having a BMI higher than 30. It is followed by Mexico, Britain and Slovakia.

Towards the bottom of the list are Italy where 8.5 percent of the population is obese, Norway with 8.3 percent and Switzerland with 7.7 percent.

The OECD used data compiled in 2002 for Australia, Austria and Portugal, and statistics from 2003 for the rest, PopNews said.

When I last visited LA it was hard to ignore the presence of countless professionals in their navy blue or beige business suits. They were slim people, not tall. All downtown LA was populated by them by day.

On the flight back to Alaska I noted these beige and blue people walking up the aisle of the airplane two across and sitting small in their roomy seats. At Seattle they all got off, all of them, and the Alaskans got on. They barely fit between the aisle seats and their heads brushed against the ceiling. The seats were big enough to handle their bodies since it was the Alaska Airlines Seattle Seahawks team plane. Everybody, flight crew too, relaxed, smiling and joking as we took off for Alaska--back to sanity.

It’s called “silicone” or “gel”.

While there is no doubt much of the world is slimmer than Americans, BMI is not a good indicator of what is “obese”. Most pro hockey players come out as “overweight” on BMI indicators, some even as obese, but most have less than 10.5% body fat (more slows down skating ability).

I also question whether Koreans and Japanese are the slimmest people in the world. I think there are many parts of Africa where people are just as slim, but likely more muscled, hence, the BMI would “show” them to be overweight when in fact, they are not.

I agree with you. I think this dependence on BMI as an marker to determine if one is overweight or not is ridiculous.

I can't think of a single country in Africa which would qualify as a First World, "developed" nation. That's why they aren't included in this article, IMO.

Half of North Korea would fight you over that comment. The rest would, too, but they’re too weak since they haven’t eaten in the last two weeks.

BMI is garbage. Totally inaccurate for anyone with muscle, and doesn’t even account for gender, so usually it places men at being obese when their weight is basically normal.
