Giuliani stands by support of publicly-funded abortions

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.

"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.

A video clip of the then-mayoral candidate issuing a similar declaration in 1989 in a speech to the "Women's Coalition" appeared recently on the Internet.

"There must be public funding for abortions for poor women," Giuliani says in the speech that is posted on the video sharing site YouTube. "We cannot deny any woman the right to make her own decisions about abortion."

When asked directly Wednesday if he still supported the use of public funding for abortions, Giuliani said "Yes."

"If it would deprive someone of a constitutional right," he explained, "If that's the status of the law, yes."

I have zero fear of Rudy pushing any gun control initiatives that would effect me.

So it's okay if others are denied their 2nd amendment rights as long as you can keep your guns.

There's little doubt in my mind that Rudy is the worst candidate in this race, from either political party.

Rudy Supports The Hyde Amendment?

Does ex-NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani now oppose taxpayer funded abortions?

From National Review Online:

On the issue of abortion, Simon focused on Giuliani’s recent comments on judges. When pressed — what is a pro-lifer like Simon doing flacking for an abortion-rights advocate? — and asked if he had any assurance that Giuliani wouldn’t support taxpayer-funded abortion as president, Simon told National Review Online, “I have an assurance that he is in favor of the Hyde amendment” (which forbids such taxpayer subsidies).

Update: A Giuliani spokesperson clarifies for the Hotline: "It's not a change of position. The Hyde Amendment is a current law and, as such, he respects it."

So: Giuliani would not work to change it -- he doesn't neccessarily support it -- but his agenda for governing does not include any changes to the law as it's currently enforced.

Okay, now YOU are starting to look like a one issue voter. You disagree with Rudy on guns, fiscal conservatism, and abortion. Yet you support him why? Does it simply come down to the WOT?

FWIW, I have a sneaking suspicion that Fred is auditioning for the VP slot...I don't think he has the "fire in the belly" to go flat out and run for the top spot. I could be wrong.

I can't see it. It's a crap job -- the only reason to want it is to boost your resume for a later run at POTUS, but Thompson would be too old to run in eight years. (Cheney's an exception, but as far as I can tell, he was asked to take the job.)

I’ve advocated this ever since seeing a sonogram of my first child. As they moved the wand, the baby turned in the direction of the sonogram. Amazing. I wonder how many would decide NOT to exercise their right to choose if they simply saw the baby like this?

I feel he is the BEST candidate in either party - by far.

Now a would-be Republican candidate for POTUS says, “If you don’t like abortion, you must subsidize it anyway.”

Bill Simon is a nice, sincere, hard-working man, but he’s out of his depth when it comes to politics. Rudy could have found a much better domestic policy adviser, but apparently chose to go with a friend. Not a good sign.

Rudy sure didn’t support the ‘current law’ of welfare reform when it required NY city to report illegal aliens to the feds. He fought it all the way to the supreme court (and lost). Then he didn’t follow the law even after that.

Rudy is clinton-tastic in his spin.

That was before the cradle-to-grave entitlement welfare system came into being. Feel free to pay a visit to an NYC public school in a predominantly welfare-dependent neighborhood. You can decide for yourself how many of these barely literate, appallingly behaved kids are going to grow up to be productive and law-abiding citizens. And decide if our society would really be better off with twice as many of them.

Sorry - let me clarify.

Abortion - I disagree

Gun Control - the man was the Governor of NYC - Gun control there can hardly be carried to a national issue.

Fiscal Conservatism - Rudy is a fiscal conservative - much more than GWB to be sure.

Ok - does that help?

Let me add - I’m more about Leadership in the general direction I agree with. The POTUS is no dictator - our checks and balances always keep the center line closer to any extremes.

I want a leader - who says what he means and means what he says.

You are absolutely right, Jake. We’ve had any 3 pro-life Presidents in the past few years and abortion is still the law of the land. It is unreasonable to expect a POTUS to do anything about it and Rudy has already said he will NOT have a pro-abortion agenda.

Actually, Cheney has had a great deal of power and influence..much more than most realize. He and Bush have reshaped, redefined the role of the VP, and the relationship of the two positions, which of course was easy to do once Cheney annoucned he had no inten tions of ever running himself. Imagine is Rudy picks Fred, or Newt ( my original choice...see my tagline) and announces that he will be focusing mainly on the War, and our foreign policy and will be delegating much oversight for domestic issues to the Veep..
