Giuliani stands by support of publicly-funded abortions

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.

"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.

A video clip of the then-mayoral candidate issuing a similar declaration in 1989 in a speech to the "Women's Coalition" appeared recently on the Internet.

"There must be public funding for abortions for poor women," Giuliani says in the speech that is posted on the video sharing site YouTube. "We cannot deny any woman the right to make her own decisions about abortion."

When asked directly Wednesday if he still supported the use of public funding for abortions, Giuliani said "Yes."

"If it would deprive someone of a constitutional right," he explained, "If that's the status of the law, yes."

- Abortion vs. the WOT - war, leadership. Ok - so we dock Rudy a point here - a point there - but he earns more points then he loses.

Compared to his rivals? I don't think so. Even McCain or Romney would still be acceptable in the WOT. And as much as I despise McCain, I'd rather have him in the White House than Guiliani, based on this information.

I laughed out loud - thanks for that.

When I see a sense of humor in this thread - I know it’s from a solid player.

I thought Margaret Sanger was dead. Sounds like her spirit is alive and spewing here at FR ... kill the potential drains on the governemnt coffers while they’re still in the womb. Jesse Jackasson and Al Sharpton agree with that also, they just hide their beliefs better.

Rudy will win regardless of the 1 hit wonders here. Rudy resonates with the American people. Freepers do not.

“Most Americans could not care less about abortion at this time. They may not like it but they don’t use that to vote for president.”

The ones that don’t care already vote for Rats. Rooty wouldn’t get their vote.

No, it’s facing reality.

Destroying innocent human life to save money is sick, no matter how you want to spin it. Seek help.

Hate to disillusion you, but over 60% of all abortions are done with some public assistance money.

It's not just the poor, many go to clinics and allege poverty.

Yes, I agree, many from broken homes do become successful, and many from poor families to do, too. The odds are getting better all the time. :)

Based on a bad interpretation of the Constitution, the system is being abused. Those are the issues.

:O)

{The only way to stop abortion is to change the minds of people by education.}

I argee. You do with reasonable restrictions like parental consent, 24 waiting periods, partial abortion bans, ban on tax funded abortions. These are things Rudy doesn’t support.

Right now, that IS the choice.

And there’s nothing fiscally conservative about offing self-supporting elderly people, or those who would have been self-supporting if they hadn’t had a third or more of their lifetime earnings taxes to fund the welfare state.

I wonder what it what take to get some of the Rudy-bots on here to stop supporting him?

Nothing will change my mind about Rudy. NOTHING.

Not good. This is inconsistent with Rudy’s supposed support for the Hyde Amendment.

“The 2nd amendment will be long after you and I are gone.

No need to go into the woods here.”

It will be there, whether the rights enumerated by it are there is another thing entirely.

Rudy is as hostile to the 2nd amendment as just about anyone on the left. There’s no denying that fact.

Keep spinning though. Somebody, someday might actually buy what you’re selling!

There is a wonderful bill being pushed in South Carolina right now.

Aborion? - you have to wait 24 hours - and have and SEE a sonagram (sp?) before you signed the forms.

Solid idea. See the child - then decide.

That will touch many hearts.
